Falling through the looking glass
he had our company--
my brother was 'the man' that night
enjoying notoriety.
Sisters, three,
upon his arm,
safe beneath his watchful gaze,
bouncing bars of New Orleans,
as he defied all hopes of try
to any that might dare presume
to cross those lines he drew.

I remember how he looked
at his sisters in perfume
Startled:  "This might sound perverse--
but looking at the three of you--
I'm proud to be your date tonight--
but somehow know I'm doomed."

He shook his head at irony
and muttered, "Any other time?
I would call myself 'lucky'--
but it would be just like me
to find these three New Orleans Belles--
the finest women in the town--
and be blessed with company--
I'm sentenced to a "Brother's Hell."

He got the kisses he deserved
and opened three doors, gentleman.
All night he would pull back three chairs--
and ordered four drinks with panache.
We started proper--uptown bound--
and slowly hopped our way.
Down the valued avenue
gradations of the money play.

Until we found the place we know,
where only natives dare to go.
The Quarter was a block away
My feet danced--so close to home.
We stopped for yet another drink,
and yes, he offered three more chairs.
He was puffed in a proud stance
with a proprietary glare--

I saw his eyes make men look down.

My brother was a mountain man--
he had both width and height.
His hair was wild as good St. John,
and had defiant prophet eyes.
Perhaps it was the whiskey drank
or just I was so close to home
but Janis played, on the jukebox
and I dared to sing along.

"Busted flat..."
(I understood)
This song was tattooed
somewhere deep.
So I stood there
at the bar
and wailed this song
accompany
I guess it was a blasphemy
for one patron
glazed eye bored.
He must have took offense, I guess
and startled me with a critique
within the smattering applause
he clapped slow and mockingly.
Snidely with intent of fraud,
and then he said to me:

"You must think you're special, hon."
(And ya'll know that hurt.)
I thought that I was having fun
but I felt shame upon my cheeks--
then I heard the crash of glass
and the thud of stool on floor.
My brother now was on his feet--
his fist in pound upon the bar.

"You must think you're special too."
My brother whispered in a hiss.
"But she has reason to think so,
because--she really IS."

He'd broken long neck from the thrust
shattered glass in vehemence--
and then he turned to broken man
asking soft, "Don't you agree?"

"If the lady will accept
apologies and my regret,
I'd like to buy her, the next drink,
and pray that she'll forget."

Oh the bar was quiet then
waiting brother's calm reply.
"All the drinks are now on HIM!"
I looked around to see the smiles.

Then they ordered drinks by brand.
I thought the man was going to cry.
My brother was his evil friend,
saying, "I know you don't mind."

"It's okay" the man replied
and pulled the plastic from his hide,
nodding to the bartender--
who gleefully complied.

But we stayed for just one drink
my brother nodded, "Grab your purse."
Then back on the street again--
he shook his head and laughed: "I'm cursed."

A very descriptive poem. I normally don't get into the longer writes, however, as with the others, I was captivated from the beginning.
You are very talented, and I do look forward to more from you.

To bum around with you three gals..
Now THAT would be a treat!
What man could be blessed with such luck
To have a night that sweet?

I picture someone hitting on
You gals - a BIG mistake!
From Bourbon Street to Slidell
They would hear the guy's bones break!

And if they asked him why then he
Could answer truthfully...
"You're out of luck, you jerks.
These gals are coming home with me!!"

This is great, Serenity. I love little slices of life poems and this is a gem...MORE!!

Cursed? Yes, afraid so. Though I knew him not, I know him well. Well enough to know that the three of you were his pride and bane.

Once had to ask a couple fellas if they'd ever seen a fight involving a beer bottle.

They bought a round themselves. (All bluff though, wranx ain't like that.)
