Senses awaken to
Wondrous scent of pine.
Thick stands of Ponderosa
Flashby stripes of
Flitting sun and shadow
On this dare devil drive.

Black stones, tarred of tree,
Flick cinders under fenders,
Delicate cymbals
Of tires sticky tune
And hynotic hum.

Ahead, waving, bushy brushes,
Rush with furry,
Tumbleweed flurry,
Across this pine cone alley,
Playing pile-up at grave's edge.

In the middle of
~Their territory~
Turning walnuts in grip of paw,
They stare you down.

Screech of brake,
Nor, honk of horn
Seem to disturb
Their concentration.

Too busy planning
Cache of hoard,
For winter's come
To notice death,
Barrelling down.

For, up on haunches
They blindfolded
To wheels of misfortune

As much as begging,

~Hit me if you can!~

(sigh) Yeah, teach those invaders a lesson, squirrels, and show them who owns the territory! (big hugggssssss) I love this, sweet friend, this has a deep environmental awareness to it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Patricia, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Smiling at you...you've probably seen
the commercial where the squirrel
purposefully runs out in front of the car
which then runs amok - and then the two
squirrels give each other the "celebrate" slap...

I enjoyed this Pat, thanks!

Sy,

Thanks for the read and reply.

Noah,

Is that how this sounded? This is my every day life. Poor, poor squirrels.
It IS their territory...not ours....
driving slowly makes no difference, for they run across the road before you can see them.

Actually only ever hit one, and felt horrible....yuk! Mostly, they do sit up right in middle of roads. On occasion they do pay attention to horns if you are close enough  they jump straight up in the air and then take off...a comic tragedy, in motion. though they usually escape...
But, there is always roadkill here.
SADLY!!!

Thanks for responding...Hugs, Pat

Karilea,

Smiling here, yes, I have seen that ad.; if only they were that smart they'd move deeper into the woods.

Glad you liked this.

Martie,

Thanks re, imagery...and yes, it is so true, about taking over their environment.  The deer are a real problem. On our main drag through town, double lanes, both sides, they bound across, always more than one...and frequently get hit.
Dangerous to both driver and deer.

But I wouldn't miss out living here for anything. Only have 65 percent of water level needed, however. We've springlike conditions, but think forest fires are going to be a real problem this summer. Had escape route signs up last year it got that close, but only once,  so I might change my mind about living here.

Probably those ornery squirrels playing with matches to get even...

Smiling, thanks, Pat

Where I live, the highways and by-ways are lined with poor racoons that have been hit by cars and such. I have even seen a whole family lying on the roadside dead. Broke my heart.

Enjoyed your poem.

Oh this is SO true Pat!
And don't they just stare at you in defiance?!
Loved the imagery here...you took the reader there.

Linda,

Eeeuuuuu...how awful. The worse thing I've seen is a little girl trying to pull by it's tail,  a hit, live wiggling squirrel off the middle of the road.

You can't pull off these roads, so I stopped and told her it could be rabid and bite her and to run home and tell her parents.

I was stern with her and waited until she obeyed.... she did not want to leave it.....felt as sorry for her and her compassion as for the squirrel.

Hugs, Pat

NancyLee,

Thanks for reading and responding.
Glad the imagery was good enough to take you there. Yes, they do seem
defiant, and my grandchildren and I can only laugh as their seeming arrogance and refusal to move, sometimes.

Thanks, hugs, Pat

Pat, since I've lived out here in the country...(my house is in the woods, but I don't stay over there)...I have heard a lot about hunters and the little animals they hunt....squirrels being one of them. I can never eat them, though....have never gotten that hungry I don't guess.

Anyway, that's what I thought of when I saw the title, before read this. Hunting is  very popular around here.

I enjoyed the way you took the reader right there... Very good, friend...

Hugs,
Ethel

Ethel,

I know what you mean. I grew up right on Lake Erie with a canal separating the property from Metzger's marsh, a huge wildlife environment that had much fowl and animals of various kinds.

Duck, pheasant, Canandian geese, rabbit, and MUSKRATS!!! were favorites to hunt and EAT!....when a little girl, my father skinned the muskrats and hung them inside out blood red on racks outside my bedroom door.....God, it is a wonder I am not nuts!!!!

Creepy!

Then he'd always make a trip to Pennsylvania to shoot coupla deer, bring them back, gutted out, and HANG THEM right outside the kitchen door!!!

Guck!

Glad didn't grow up here, we'd probably have squirrel for dinner quite often. Tsk! (No wonder I was skinny, who could eat that, so, I know what you mean)

Thanks for replying...gee, lots of memories today....

Bill,

Yes, they seem quite nuts...this entire area is loaded with walnut trees and I think they ate one too many! Thanks for reading and the reply.

Hugs to you  both, Pat

Duncan,

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and reply. Running down these roads there really is a hypnotic hum of the sticky tires....etc.

Yes, that ad. does remind me of these almost arrogant squirrels.

Again, thank you, glad you liked that part.

Hugs, Pat

Alyssa,

Skunks? We had one hit in mid. of night three houses down and could smell it for couple days. Hope that isn't your dogs chasing them. Bet you go thr. much catsup/tomato sauce to remove that scent...thank for reply.

Raph,

Yes, they do become quite tame and fearless when fed regularly...

Lori,

The reason I hit one was oncoming traffic and cars behind me. It was the squirrel or a smashing into or being smashed...poor little thing!

Dixie,

They are cute! Lady up here has several come up on her porch who come daily for peanuts, and go nose to nose thr. sliding door screen w. indoor cat. Yes, the screen is ruined!

Thanks to all of you for taking your time to read/reply. Hugs, Pat

PatMyDearFriend~
I think you do the imagery so well.
You certainly placed the readers (evident from the replies) right there !!!

I thank God that I live in a rural country area that allows the free roam of those little squirrley critters up and down the trees in the meadow~

I place feeders on the Oak trees ... and sit back and smile at the antics as they scramble.
Watching them jump from tree to tree is always a breathtaking moment~

How tragic when I do see them on the road ...

Great write, lady~
I love you~
