What is a nation that is truly free? Are we? Are we not a country that is old enough to die in war. I am 19, a high school graduate. If I were male, I would have had to register for selective service. If I went to war and lost a leg at 19, I came home. I still am not old enough to consume alcohol. I am not allowed things that adults are allowed. Is that free? No. Not in reality. If I were an inmate in jail, I would not be allowed alcohol. Does that mean as a free American I am incarcerated by the law that makes it illegal for me to consume alcohol. |

Seems this isn't about freedom, it's about alcohol. ![]() If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

No, I can't drink alcohol. I'm only 19. I was just something I was thinking about earlier. Isn't that weird. |

I have nothing else with which to compare. I did, however, live a portion of my life living the hippy version of "free." It was total chaos, and considering the price I pay now in health insurance, hardly "free." There is more food for thought in this than you realize my friend. ![]() (love the new pic too) Hugs |

Safety first? Absolutely not. Though I often think people confuse the issue here (political freedom, the right to criticize the government, versus social freedom, the ability to live your life free from criticism), freedom gives you the ability to make bad decisions. |

In many ways, we are all free in certain aspects. As cited recently in a number of other threads, however, freedom without government allows us to be entirely too selfish, ergo, following our more rebellious passions as, apparently from what I have read in the last few days, we cannot govern ourselves and expect to lead peaceful lives. It's a conundrum...that's what it is.... and as for drinking? Don't. It only adds weight after the fact of insobriety. ![]() |

I guess total 'freedom' as you're thinking of it would be anarchy... personally, thats not very attractive to me. I'm also 19, a university student, and I don't get bent out of shape because alcohol is restricted to me. I"m glad there are laws and measures placed on things.. I've seen what can happen when young people and alcohol get out of hand.. well, it's anarchy. (WVU Vs. Virginia Tech, 2003) ![]() The fact that we live in a place where we can VOTE at the age of 18 and choose the people who choose our laws is what makes our nation free. Also.. if you have done something to be put in jail, you have forfit some of your freedoms by breaking the law. Oh, make me Thine forever |

Well, this was more of a getting the whole debate I already had out of my system, many of you took it the wrong way. I am not holding the standpoint of a 19 year old who wants to drink. Far from it. I merged the outcome into one topic and posted it to see what other opinions on the subject were and what I got was the assumption that I am a ungrateful teenager that thinks alcohol is the most important thing in life. Which is not the case. I guess I shouldn't have posted. |

Using that as an example was just fine, and people mistook your point. The point is, is that we are restricted in a land where we are supposedly free. Freedom has a new meaning, something that we don't normally think of as the definition.. I do understand the whole, "if there were no laws..." thing, but there's also the fact that rules and laws restrict us from being human, thus killing our natural instincts. Don'tcha think? |
