Do you remember last years' $300 per person Tax Rebate. Here was my take on that. Uncle Santa Tax paying Americans are all aflutter about the refund checks that are now starting to arrive in mailboxes everywhere. Thank you. Oh, thank you great and wise government for this blessing. To throw open the national coffers for the benefit of its' citizenry is an act of unimaginable generosity. Lo, a gift of hundreds of dollars for each taxpayer in good standing. No, our politicians have been taking so much of our money for so long, that even they became horrified at what was happening. But, not too horrified, as the amount of our checks represent only about 2-3 weeks of withholding. Ever since the “Temporary” Personal Income Tax Bill was enacted decades ago, our elected representatives have become more and more comfortable taking larger and larger portions of the money we earn. They did this because we let them. Aside from the occasional malcontent, there has been no great outcry, no passionate protests. Whenever they felt a bit randy, we just bent over and took it. I guess if you get raped repeatedly by the same assailant, it becomes a relationship, something that you come to expect, a thing you can count on. So, perhaps this is a gift after all, they didn’t have to give us squat and who would make them? Us? Puh-lease. We do replace our politicians with other politicians from time to time, but I liken this to replacing a few barrels of muddy water from the Mississippi with barrels of clear, clean spring water. All that is accomplished is the tainting of good water. The character of the river remains unchanged. Our Government, like Ol’ Man River, just keeps on rollin’ along. Just enjoy this stipend. Try not to think that for years our government spent an equal amount on a toilet seat. Hmmm. Here are some ways that Americans may be spending their refund checks. $ 300 can buy for you; 5 Hours with Miss Cleo the psychic A 1989 Ford Escort A hunting dog of doubtful parentage A 1000 minute phone card One night on the town 9000 miles worth of gasoline 6 Pay per View WWF matches 2 cords of firewood 5 cases of Fleishman’s Vodka 10 months of AOL 30 hits of Viagra 3 decent new tires 25 yrs of Family Circle Magazine A $3000 bail bond 3 bus tickets to anywhere 1 artificial breast 1,200 slices of American cheese 10 cartons of cigarettes Everything at a large yard sale 900 pampers ~wrants "Writing is a perfectly natural thing to do...provided it's done in private and you wash your hands afterward"....Heinlein. |

Now I feel cheated! When the premiere (Canadian version of senator, so far as I know) of my province decided to give us rebates, it was only $100 Canadian. Which is, in our current economy.... Dinner and a movie. Not a fancy dinner, of course. But not Denny's either. So at least keep in mind that when your politicians are out to bribe you, you're getting over three times what us Canadians were bribed with! Hell, prob'ly four times. Ah, the wonders of a corrupt government in a broke country. Keep writin', dude! "Silly bunny, there are no monsters in here." - Chrys, from Gloom Cookie |

A lot of things in life are corrupt, and a lot are not. Something's are only partly were others are completely. Where all the money actually goes, who knows. I'm sure you could find out if we tried hard enough, but isn't it easier to just [edit]. Not an excuse, not even close, but who here is not as human as our politicians, who we chose. What I like to think of is how stimulating my taxes are on the economy. How wonderful to see our interests around the world being executed. How, now more than ever, to see us protected and rehabilitated and new securities initiated. Is the glass half full or half empty? In any case, I sometimes like what I see... Whether the left or right is in the divers seat, It's good to know how strong we are... But with this, comes a price... Nothings free...
