Isn't that annoying?
I know that personally, the odds of me reading a poem, when written next to the title are phrases such as:
"Please read!"
"Comments Please!"
"Please respond!"
"Let me know what you think"
That the odds of me reading that poem decrease substantially.
Now I understand that many people, (myself included,) enjoy and thrive off of the responses of others. But to me, placing words such as those next to the title implies that they deserve more attention simply because they ask for it.
Or perhaps, as a friend was suggesting the other day, they feel that their poem is not going to be responded on because they don't have faith in it.
This branches off to two section.
#1: They think the poem isn't good, but want to hear good things about it anyway.
IMHO, this is silly. If you want to hear someone lie to you, call a psychic on the 900 lines. If you want honest critique, then sit back and wait for it. If your poem is not good, and people don't respond to it, consider reworking it.
#2: They want honest criticism, but are unwilling to place the poem in CA.
IMOH again, this is silly. This clogs up the main forum with many pieces that would be better suited in CA. If someone feels that their poetry is not "finished," or is in need of some help, then perhaps CA is where they need to take it.

I for one know I will read no poetry in Open with begging entreaties attached in parentheses next to the title.

End of rant.

Hey man...I can understand completely. In all likelihood, they were sent a url to the open forum, bookmarked it, and never looked outside their little egocentric 'poetic' world. Nor do I feel they actually want actual literary criticism. They want warm, smarmy, Hallmark sound-bytes so that they can have a warm, fuzzy, feel-good sensation running along the nib of their pen...if they actually write their stuff on actual paper before keying it onto a forum.

Hmm...all that might have been more than 2 cent's worth...anyone got change for a nickle?

NOPE!!!..I refuse to read anything that asks me to...ROFL...ok, so I made an exception in your case..*g*...so now you know, I'm a little rebel..

If it's for contructive criticism then why not post it in the right place?...and now my mind is dreaming up a poem call "read this NOW!..belly important.."...oops...I wonder how many would?...Maybe I can beat Michael's wanna be on top entry...*g*

Seriously, forget the humour...I do agree with you..

Ok, Christopher, you got me a little afraid. I did that recently. I had to test it out, just once... is once plea enough? Guess not. But usually I would post my serious work in the CA forum.

However, have no fear- I will be doing that no longer. If I lost any respect from you, it wasn't purposed.

You already know I agree with you on this issue my friend. There is one exception to that agreement however. There some who do so not only for attention but as an honest cry for help. Granted they are in the vast minority but the recent events with Echo show there is a need to be more receptive. A friend just told me that reading her recent verse, all the signs were there. I know we aren't a bunch of free therapists and we cannot be expected to read posts with, "Please read" in the title but I wonder how many say that needing help from someone.

Ditto Dream's Statement,
If someone is asking for Critique (upfront)
I am compelled to read and offer my best. Though I usually would offer my suggestions by email. And, Chris, you well know my opinion on the rest by now.

Hmm..I think it is ultimately unfair to ignore a post just because it has the request of "Please read...etc..etc. If the same person doesn't do it regularly then what is the deal. Anyway, thats one's own perrogative to do so. Please understand some of the reasons people do that though. Just because it is annoying simply isn't a fair enough reason to avoid another poet asking for help.
I remember posting a few with those requests attached to the title. I did so only because they were the few that I was putting into a list of submission for attempt at publishing. I was very serious about the chosen ones, and asked for what I thought we were here to do for each other anyway.
Thanks and have a good day. Hope I didn't trample any toes or make anyone mad. Dream sweet all.

Ah yes, something I thankfully learned the first day I was here!! I saw a couple others doing the "Please respond" and stuff and did it myself and then realized how this place works!! I completely agree!!

Same here!
It's almost arrogant actually, as if implying that people WON'T bother unless they see a plea. Give us a break - we're all here to READ the poetry aren't we?!!!
It does speak of insecurity and I have to admit I can understand why a new member would write 'please read' - I guess it could be overwhelming to see your works disappear with nary a reply.

Um....er....ya, you're right but, you know what? You got me to read this ... didn't ya? LOL

BTW....I never put those "requests" on my poetry.

Titles work. I can see where some of the folks have a problem with titles, and you see that kind of request. But there sure have been a lot of "Please Read" titles, and I for one, have probably read that poem. [Joke, folks!]

Now Chris, if we can just get the folks who post same to come all the way down to The Alley to read all of the above, you'd probably have the problem licked.

BTW, I like seeing your Alley topics - they are, for one, never fluff pieces.

Well the mystery is solved for me. When I first came here I ahd the habit of posting several poems, often attached to a "please read". And then when I got no replies, I would think, oh, I'll post more, with more desperate pleas attached...didn't work. I don't think alot of people do it to be arrogant, they just haven't gotten many replies, and think thats the way to do it. I will agree that too many people use the "please read." i don't think it would pose such a problem if you only saw, say, one a day of these. But it is not the case.

Oh, and I finally figured out why I wasn't being read, and quit posting so much, so I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my former habits.

Hmm...Must the ones who rarely do so be punished unfairly with annoyance and disregard because of the ones that do it more often?

If it was just an occasional occurance, and not accompanied by a million posts at one time, I wouldn't have a problem with it!
