Do to circumstances beyond my control, my poor ears were assaulted by Conservative Talk Radio shows for nearly a week.

I expected Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, Carr, Levin, would have opinions different than mine, but was shocked by the ranting, raving, actual screaming, name calling re the President, members of Congress, Democrats, “liberals”, and the rudeness directed at some callers by those hosts. To me it seemed "Hate Radio" would be a more appropriate description.

Other than showing the world voters realized more of the same with McCain/Palin was unacceptable, perhaps electing Obama at this time was a huge mistake.

Conservatives seem so focused on seeing his administration fail, they’re almost blindly rejecting serious consideration/discussion re many of his proposals and finding solutions to the problems we now face. A good example of that is the Right’s early reaction to his Healthcare plan. First they tarred and feathered Obama with their communist/fascist/socialist/marxist brush and then chose death panels as their talking point in an attempt to discredit him, his proposals and strike fear in the hearts of those who believe what they hear/read instead of actually checking the facts.

Perhaps if we had elected McCain/Palin, the country would have hit bottom by now, as an addict hits bottom, and instead of living in denial, wanting more of the same, the previous administrations’ failed policies, Conservatives would be open to other options and Conservative Talk Radio would be a forum for discussing solutions rather than a vehicle for spreading hatred.

Olbermann: Scott Brown's A 'Homophobic, Racist, Teabagging Supporter of Violence Against Women'

"In Scott Brown we have an irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, ex-nude model, teabagging supporter of violence against woman and against politicians with whom he disagrees."
Such was actually said Monday evening -- on national television!!! -- by a person currently employed by one of America's largest corporations, General Electric.
If the following "special comment" by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann is considered acceptable discourse on a cable news network today, there really is something very wrong in our nation (video embedded below the fold with transcript, h/t Story Balloon):

In short, in Scott Brown we have an irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, ex-nude model, teabagging supporter of violence against woman and against politicians with whom he disagrees. In any other time in our history, this man would have been laughed off the stage as an unqualified and a disaster in the making by the most conservative of conservatives. Instead, the commonwealth of Massachusetts is close to sending this bad joke to the Senate of the United States.

Garofalo: Tea Party Goers Are Racists Who Hate Black President

During last year's election campaign, liberal media members treated Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin with a hatred most Americans had never witnessed from the press.

On Thursday's "Countdown," MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and his guest Janeane Garofalo defamed fellow citizens who attended the prior day's Tea Parties with the same vitriolic contempt.

Garofalo actually called Party-goers "a bunch of teabagging rednecks," adding "this is about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up."

But that's just the beginning, for what Olbermann and Garofalo engaged in Thursday evening is amongst the most vile, hate-filled attacks on average American citizens ever conveyed on national television by so-called journalists. Please brace yourself (video embedded below the fold with transcript corrected from closed-captioning, h/t NBer Jeff Fuller):

Garofalo on Olbermann's countdown (to no ratings):

Let's be very honest about what this is about. This is not about bashing Democrats. It's not about taxes. They have no idea what the Boston Tea party was about. They don't know their history at all. It's about hating a black man in the White House," she said on MSNBC's "The Countdown" with Keith Olbermann Thursday evening. "This is racism straight up and is nothing but a bunch of teabagging rednecks. There is no way around that."

Garofalo: Tea Party Protesters 'Functionally Retarded Adults'; Says 'I Want My Country Back' Code for 'I Want My White Guy Back' By Jeff Poor Created 2009-08-22 16:53

You probably already knew Jeanane Garofalo was no fan of conservatives, Republicans or just about anything that could be described as right of center. But the former Air America host and MSNBC regular really has a low regard for conservative activists.

In an appearance at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 21 [1], Garofalo ripped into tea party protesters, or what some of the wizards of smart on the left have deemed "tea baggers" [2] calling them "functionally retarded adults" and "racists."

"Do you remember tea baggers?" Garofalo said. "It was just so much easier when we could just call them racists. I just don't know why we can't call them racists, or functionally retarded adults."

Garofalo has made prior overtures alleging any public display of discontent with the current president is nothing more than racial hatred. Back in April she called tea party protesters "a bunch of tea bagging rednecks" on MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann." [2] However, she contended the public's frustration expressed over the direction of the country was code for racism.

"The functionally retarded adults, the racists - with their cries of, ‘I want my country back,'" she said. "You know what they're really saying is, ‘I want my white guy back.' They apparently had no problem at all for the last eight years of habeas corpus being suspended, the Constitution being [expletive] on, illegal surveillance, lied to on a war or two, two stolen elections - yes, the John Kerry one was stolen too. That's not tin-foil hat time. That's just..."

OMG, Brown really did pose in the nude! I thought that was a joke or something. I'm shocked, really, really shocked that voters would elect someone who's such a poor role model for the children.

Yes, Balladeer, there's hate speech coming from both sides - sort of like what sometimes happens here in the Alley. Wouldn't it be more productive to stop the ad hominem attacks, the mockery, sarcasm, nit picking and stick to discussing facts and the real issues?

That reminds me - “Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy ”- an interesting bio that explores Kennedy’s failures and his “redemption”. Not a great literary work but not a bad read for a long winter night.

Thanks Huan Yi.

Dear Mike,

It might astonish you to know that Left wing hate speech doesn't feel any more attractive than Right wing hate speech from my perspective.  The Senator Elect from Massachusetts did apparently pose for Cosmo a number of years back.  Saying that's so is not an ad hominem attack, however, unless it suggests that  folks who pose as nude models are de facto unable to formulate an intelligent piece of political comment, and I have too much respect for Jane Fonda to believe such tripe.

I don't know enough about the man to have any idea about whether he is homophobic, irrational, racist, or reactionary.  I believe he is an open supporter of the Tea Party folks, though I don't regard that as such a terrible thing; they represent a diverse range of populist points of view to my point of view, some of which I'd agree with, some of which I wouldn't, depending on factors that really are off the subject here.  I think Obermann was mischaracterizing them, or was clumping them together in a way that may not have been justified.  Nor do I know if Scott Brown supports violence against women and against politicians with whom he doesn't agree.  I have heard Mr Beck express violent thoughts about several politicians he has not agreed with, and his accusations are very close to inciting violence, as near as I can tell.  Had they been about anybody but a politician, I think he'd have found himself in very deep trouble indeed, so I think that there is a history of this sort of thing that's active on the right at this point in time.  I wish it wasn't.

None of these comments by Mr. Obermann, at least that you've pointed out, suggest that the logic and rationality of his opinions should be dismissed without consideration because of his character flaws or potential character flaws.  Should any of the other comments be true, beyond being somebody sympathetic with the Tea Party folks, I'd want to consider the quality of his thinking at length in looking at his positions.  They still wouldn't mean that his thinking was bad on any particular issue, simply that I would have trouble enjoying his company.

About the reality of the accusations Mr. Obermann made, the only one that I regard as substantiated is that of being the nude model.  I find myself somewhat envious of having a history that might include this, and if Mr. Obermann doesn't as well, then he freaking well should., in my opinion.

"Hate Radio" was not an ad hominem attack.  Indeed, Radio is a medium and not a person; by definition, an ad hominem attack is impossible because the traslation is roughly "upon the man."

The comment about "role models" might not be recognizable to an old right wing war horse like yourself, but it is instantly familiar to many if not most old lefties as the sort of attack levied against lefties by right wing attack machines.  It is the basis of the right wing swear, often fabricated out of the whole cloth, and most often used against lefties, but on occasion used against fellow righties.  On one of the occasions Jphn McCain was running in ...I believe it was South Carolina, perhaps two election cycles ago, or three, maybe in 2000 — the dirty tricks section of one of his fellow primary candidates ginned up a rumor that he had some sort of mistress or mistress and a child stashed in the state.  It was a complete fabrication, as these things most often are, but it was enough to cost McCain that crucial primary.

One of the things that is occasionally said during these contretemps is that the candidate should resign because they are such a poor role model for the children, whether the story is true or not.  You will no doubt remember how this was used against Senator McCain, and how many still try to use it against Senator Kennedy, even now, after his death.

I myself could never run for office.  First, because I've never been such a clean cut guy, and second, because I'd get mad if somebody tried to use my past against me, and that's really not a good political strategy as I understand it.  Never let 'em see you sweat.

Anyway, I got a chuckle from JM's comment and couldn't for the life of me understand why you got upset.  It was emphatically not ad hominem as well, since it was seemed clearly funny and mockingly directed not at Scott Brown, but at Republican Dirty Tricks.

It is good to see you using the term, however, and to be thinking about ad hominem stuff as something that really should be avoided by everybody, not just you.  The part about the ad hominem attack that makes it so tough is not only that it involves a smear, but that at base it's anti-democratic, as though people with faults can't have points to make that need to be listened to on their own merits.  It's what the country was built on, in a way.  No matter who you are or what your past has been, you can have that right idea or contribute that right think that will make things work.  Maybe it'll make you money, maybe it'll make things better, maybe not.  But you should be heard on the basis of what you have to say.

That's what's so destructive about ad hominem thinking.

My best, Bob Kaven

How about if someone claims it suggests that the person is an unfit role model for children, Bob? You see no personal attack, sarcasm or mockery in that? Hard to believe....

None of these comments by Mr. Obermann, at least that you've pointed out, suggest that the logic and rationality of his opinions should be dismissed without consideration because of his character flaws or potential character flaws.

Obviously, then, your same thoughts must go to Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly and Limbaugh.

It is the basis of the right wing swear, often fabricated out of the whole cloth, and most often used against lefties, but on occasion used against fellow righties.

You mean like the "right wing conspiracy" Hillary pointed out concerning the supposed lies about Clinton and sweet Monica? Now THERE was a role model, along with Teddy and John Edwards.

But you should be heard on the basis of what you have to say.

Then you agree that calling him an unfit role model for children is over the line. Thank you.

and I have too much respect for Jane Fonda to believe such tripe.

That saddens me, Bob. I wish you and Hanoi Jane the best.

Though, as I've mentioned before, I've decided to no longer directly participate in debates in this particular forum because I don't feel in a conscious place when I do so..............I nonetheless enjoy reading them from the sidelines still..........and I just wanted to say I'll be sure never to consider a political career seeing to it I am.............ahem...........an erotic model myself...........who has probably already went further than Mister Brown!

Alright, keep up the talk/"talk" everyone! (big group hug)

Good Morning Balladeer. Just to refresh your memory -

Twice in your #15 you used the word "unfit" implying that's what I'd said about Brown. I didn't say "unfit" I said "poor". And, just so you know, I couldn't find the tongue in cheek smilie when I wrote that.

Have a good one!
