NEW ORLEANS — In his first presidential visit to this city, Barack Obama praised the resiliency of residents in rebuilding their flood-wrecked homes and promised to continue flowing federal dollars to the effort.

"It is always an inspiration to spend time with the men and women who have reminded the rest of us what it means to persevere in the face of tragedy and rebuild in the face of ruin," Obama said during a town-hall-style meeting at the University of New Orleans.

His "spending time", I assume, refers to the four whole hours he spent there before jetting off to a Democratic $34,000.00 per couple fund-raiser in San Francisco.

I am happy to applaud whatever he and the government can do to help New Orleans. They need and deserve the help.

It would be good for one of his advisors to let him know that Mississippi was hit by the same Hurricane and suffered an incredible amount of damage also. He has made six trips to New Orleans. He has yet to make one to Mississippi, none as a Senator, none as a candidate and none as President. Maybe sometime when he has a couple of hours to spare between fund-raisers, he  can acknowledge them, also....or not.

I may be wrong but the impression I get is that the US is a fairly big place, if I'm right then I dare say that any President would be fairly pushed to visit every part of it. I think that the best anyone could do would be to select demographic and geographic area types to match his\her available time. New Orleans seems to me to be one of those; it's the epitome of a hurricane-decimated area whose inhabitants endured more than they needed to.

If I were a Mississippian I might be a little disappointed that my particular area wasn't selected to be the representative of type but I think I'd accept that the visit was recognition of the suffering endured by all regardless of the actual location.

That's my thoughts anywho.

Bob will probably be along in a while to point out all the places that Bush didn't visit and you'll get the chance to claim that he's always harping on about the last eight years. There'll be a flurry of links, claims and counter claims maybe even maps with pretty coloured pins, and when it's all over the answer will be the same.

You can't be everywhere at once.

It may be to your advantage to check a U.S. map before making such a statement, Grinch. Then you would see how close the two are.

No, a President can't go everywhere, I suppose, but that's not what we are talking about. We are talking about SIX visits to one place versus ZERO to another place just as much of a  hurricane-decimated area whose inhabitants endured more than they needed to.

Your excuse for him "you can't be everywhere at once" is not only weak but borders on pitiful. We are not talking about "at once". We are talking about all the years that have passed since the devastation. If he could find six occasions to go to New Orleans, don'tcha think he could find one to go there? One could get the idea that perhaps he cares  much more for New Orleans than Mississipians who were also devastated. Now why would that be?

but I think I'd accept that the visit was recognition of the suffering endured by all regardless of the actual location.

Wow....you have outdone yourself. Take a bow...

You're getting very grouchy lately Mike, are you getting enough sleep or are those nasty Liberals Bob and LR winding you up?

I wasn't making excuses for Obama alone, I was making excuses for Bush and all the other Presidents that have previously done exactly what you're complaining about. They can't go everywhere so they carefully select where they do go, is it fair? Not if you look on it as a conscious decision not to go somewhere, but that's not what it is.

The places they go to are just a subset of places they could have gone to - there's nothing more sinister to it than that.

As I said Bob will be along in a little while to wind you up with a list of places Bush never went to, when he does feel free to tell him that Presidents can't go everywhere so they select the places that they think they'll make the most impact. If you don't I will.

Or you can play Mr. Grouchy and say his arguments are weak or pitiful or, my personal favourite:

"You have outdone yourself."

Alternatively you could take a nap.

I just had a blast on the Mississippi Gulf Coast last weekend, Mike. Beau Rivage Casino was PACKED--Alice Cooper was, well, very Alice Cooper, and the Hard Rock cafe' was just a jammin' as well, what with the convention in town that showcased classic cars that coulda made a Lexus blush....

So I'm sure it wasn't an intentional snub from President Obama. Nor was it an intentional snub that he didn't ride through New Orleans East, or St. Bernard Parish, or Slidell, or nearer the border to Texas...where Katrita held so many hostage.

Perhaps he was just trying make up for the insult added to injury for the misplaced faith the citizens of the Greater New Orleans Area had placed in our government--parish, state but most especially Federal.

I mean, the buck is supposed to stop at Federal, isn't it?

Or does it just stop at Wall St. now?

I can point with pride at the progress our local government has made. Blighted houses demolished, codes--ENFORCED, and you may trust that now that I'm able I'll climb and walk those levees myself come springtime, and let you know if the Feds are getting it right this time. (Complaints of seepage prior to 2005 are a matter of record.)

You do err, comparing Mississippi to New Orleans. The disaster in New Orleans could have, should have, and was SUPPOSED to be prevented. The neglect of G.W. and lack of response was inexcusable, and Mississippi was granted more dollars per capita IMMEDIATELY after the storm as well.

I cried during Obama's inaugural address (along with YOU, I'm sure) but for a different reason...Obama mentioned US--New Orleans as part of the nation, and it was only then that I felt a bit of that chip on my shoulder start to feel lighter.

Is it enough to just mention us? HELLZ to the NO. (grammatical pun fully intended.)

Do not be divisive about our family in Mississippi--we ain't buyin' THAT either. Talk to my friend, who had a home in Lakeview, as well as a home in Gulfport. Well, never mind. Kathe' has more spunk than I. I doubt she'd speak, but she'd show you a sign.

Come here, Mike. Please.

I had dinner last Sunday with Jo Jo Powell (who I hope is recovering nicely from her surgery) at Mulatte's. I think you might have enjoyed that.

And yanno? I can't believe you went there (meaning here). You know damned well that the screamingly pitiful shame of the event(s) in New Orleans and it's dependent outlying communities was a study of Government neglect--and I personally consider it the crap-icing on the G.W. cake.

tsk..

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get ready for my weekend porch party--one of my new neighbors (who lost everything in a subdivision called Woodmere) has been quite the emotional catalyst for me, so if I'm not around much these days, it's because that woman won't allow me to lay down and die. Nor will my other new neighbor from New Orleans East.

We are not going to be divided here. We had a preview of this recession because of the storms, and Obama is correct--we WILL persevere.

Like him? We're just getting started. (That's actually all I caught of the Town Hall meeting--the rest of my time yesterday was spent watching an expletive spaceship soar across the Colorado sky...)

And I thought New Orleans was eccentric?

PEH. (That's for Susan C.)

Don't make come back in here again!

They can't go everywhere so they carefully select where they do go

Got it. So Obama carefully selected to go to New Orleans six times and carefully selected not to go to Mississippi ever. That explains it all.

Yes, sorry for the grouchiness. A barium enema revealed that I have another puncture in my intestines and I'll be going in for more surgery next week. I had hoped it was all over but it appears there is still pain, recuperation and lost work days in my future. I am really not a happy camper at this time...sorry if it comes out in my comments.

You DID, however, outdo yourself

Got it, serenity gal. Since New Orleans was devastated due to government neglect, it is fitting that Obama goes there half a dozen time and doesn't bother with Mississippi...why didn't I think of that? (I still have the pics of hundreds of school busses sitting in parking lots because Nagin didn't bother using them to evacuate people...guess that was Bush's fault, too (actually, I think I still have the records showing how New Orleans politicians squandered for forty years the money that was supposed to be used on levees designed to protect the city against such tragedies...Bush again!!)

Give my best to JoJo...hope she recovers quickly.

Mike? Sometimes it's just better to play Mafia Wars...

in the meantime, I hope and pray your doctor helps you wisely--a patch/liquid pain meds, along with liquid nutritional supplements to offset malabsorption.

It's all that will do. I happen to know.

You too, can and will persevere.

Actually, the morphine drip is wonderful. I look like a contestant on Jeopardy trying to ring in to answer a question the way I handle that thing!!!

Thanks for the well-wishes, m'lady.

Sorry to hear the bad news, Michael. Hang in there, buddy.

I know that adversity is supposed to make us better people, but I think you are good enough already!

Dear Mike,

I second the above.  Good luck you gnarly galoot.  Serenity is right about the pain meds.

Best wishes, Bob Kaven
