Michael Moore: Hurricane Coming During GOP Convention 'Proof There Is a God in Heaven' Controversial filmmaker admits he's delighted to see a natural disaster potentially interfere with the Republican event. By Jeff Poor Business & Media Institute 8/30/2008 12:13:18 AM “I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven,” Moore said, laughing. “To have it planned at the same time – that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for day one of the Republican Convention, up in the Twin Cities – at the top of the Mississippi River.” http://www.businessandmedia.org/articles/2008/20080830000004.aspx So what do you think? Does this warrant another bear hug from Jimmy Carter? |

And we are to expect what? Seriously, Mike, this guy has made a million dollars shooting himself in the foot... why stop now? What has me laughing at this moron is the fact that Obama only got 8 points in the post-convention "bounce"... If Gov. Palin makes the speech anything like the first one she did as a VP contenter, and if McCain makes a showing anything close to what he did with that "debate" in the church a while ago... then they are going to get 15 points in the bump... and the Obama camp will be screaming about the unfairness of it. What would you attempt to do...if you knew you could not fail?. www.myspace.com/mindlesspoet |

Well, to me this was even more sleazy, partying while folks in New Orleans were drowning. http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/images/mccain-bush-cake.jpg |

Come on Jennifer. There is nothing in the world more sleazy than Michael Moore. |

Dear Not a Poet, Apparently you didn't look at the picture. If you did look at the picture, you apparently didn't look at Senator McCain's record on torture and human rights. Once it became apparent that it was possible for him to get the nomination, he reversed himself on torture so quickly I got whiplash. The pun was intentional. Considering how strongly he said he was opposed to it beforehand, sleazy might be considered an appropriate word. As for Michael Moore, I wouldn't defend everything he's said by any stretch of the imagination. On the other hand, he's not running for the Presidency, is he? And of the statements he's made about the truthfulness of the current President, a high proportion of them were true. Certainly none of them came near the assertions that were made in the presidential primaries in 2004 by folks working for President Bush that Senator McCain had fathered a black child out of wedlock. Those were sleazy. No only did he have a right to be upset, but the black population of South Carolina had a right to be upset for the use of racial politics as well. I was upset, and I was a Democrat, already steamed at the sleazy things the Swift-boat people were trying to do to John Kerry. The fact that Senator McCain now has the same people working for him in his current campaign that he condemned as sleazy for their campaign against him in South Carolina in the last election cycle is not to my my mind an example of high nobility. Michael Moore made some mistaken conclusions about the connection of George W, Bush and the Saudi Government. For what it's worth, Ann Richards corrected him out front in public, saying that any oil man had to have Saudi oil connections if they were going to do their job. Moore has been wrong. He has also been right, and to call him sleazy is not an accusation that Republicans can make with clean hands; especially with the enormous number of lies and distortions this administration and its congressional allies have given voice to over the past eight of so years. Should you wish to go into those, starting with the lies about the Republican intentions for dealing with Iraq in 2001, we can do so again, but these lies have been documented and discussed in these pages many times over the past year or so. I have never seen you raising any serious objections while this was going on to the documentation that was offered. I include the discussion about New Orleans and the Federal Response to the 2004 Hurricane. That you would consider the comments of a social commentator and satirist on the same level as the disasters of Katrina I can only attribute to my own failure to grasp your meaning. Sleaze is Appointing a college buddy named Brownie whose expertise is (maybe) in race horses to lead an organization responsible for disaster relief for the entire country when he has not the slightest clue about anything but looking good in a suit and knowing the best places to eat. Sleaze is pretending he's done a good job when the whole country is watching and seeing that he has not. I could go on, but I will not. Sincerely yours, Bob Kaven |

Thank you for not going on, Bob, before I begin to feel embarrassed for you. We have a man, and I use the term loosely, saying that God sent the hurricanes at the same time the RNC was going on - and laughing about it - and you cannot simply say that's wrong and a complete lack of class on his part. Instead you and Jennifer go the finger pointing route to try to change the focus in other areas. The thread is about MIchael Moore's comments, not about all of the pebbles you are trying to toss into the stream. I'm sorry you can't recognize it for what it is and him for what he is, but it's not entirely unexpected. |

Sure there is, Pete, like dragging your pregnant unmarried teen and your special needs infant along on the campaign trial and using them for photo ops. |

What is not entirely unexpected, Mike; and why? It sounds as though you are hinting at something about me here. Are you? If you are, why not come out and say so? If not, I'd rather you used a construction that didn't sound so much like insinuation or a slur on my character. It's impolite. Please say what you mean here. |

In a thread about sleaze, I'd rather none was directed at me unless you care to be explicit and factual and not offer some mere opinion on this. |

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Business_%26_Media_Institute For those interested, the Business & Media Institute who originates the report that Balladeer quotes is identified in the progressive web site above as a conservative organization. To set up an interview with the CEO of the organization one must apparently go through a man who was active in the 2004 swiftboat veterans group and is a member of the PR firm that apparently does work for Business & Media Institute. None of this means that what the report says is wrong. It simply suggests that Balladeer would have done well to use a second source to confirm a quote of this sort, considering the reputation that the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth have among some of us for not being terribly interested in the truth but more in political gain. The quality of the judgement of a partisan organization such as this one is certainly open to some question, as well might be the accuracy of quotes attributed to it. They may in fact be both accurate and truthful; I remain hopeful pending Balladeer's confirmation of this information from more conventionally accepted as objective sources. Sincerely yours, Bob K. |

Bob, I have only a second before leaving for work and can't make this long but first let me say that there was certainly no sleaze directed at you. Whether we disagree or not, you are always a gentleman I respect. What I meant was that sometimes I just can't figure out where your interpretations of my comments come from. Secondly, when I googled for that information after hearing it on the news, I found a wealth of news agencies that carried the quote, not only the one you hint may be discounted because it is conservative. If you type in Moore Hurricane Comments into your search engine you will find them, also. I realize that kill the messenger is an effective tactic at times, but there is plenty to substantiate this quote. Have a great day..... |

My opinion only, but I am actually getting tired of reading many of the discussions since, the same old same old, from the same posters comes up no matter the initial thread intent... Some of it very hateful in the way it is presented...I feel it doesn't matter which side of the aisle you are on, you can't win on what should be intelligent "discussions". On line and in other media you can find information that will support anything you want. Why can't these discussions bring about the good and compare that, in those we wish to elect, instead of always harboring on the past. Remember that the congress and senate and all those other elective officials ALSO aid in making the decisions and have even more power at times than the President and VP. Living in a borough in PA it seems no matter who we elect and whichever party they are in, even when changed, we still get the same results... As Balladeer responded, I also can almost expect the exact responses over and over from the same people no matter how the thread starts out. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lrAf_TE-1I There is the link of the interview with Keith Obermann where Michael Moore made the comments. Hopefully you will accept that as sufficient proof......hopefully |

"Michael Moore made some mistaken conclusions..." Bob, surely you jest. And Jennifer, I guess everyone is entitled to their own definition of sleaze. Girls, even daughters, sometimes do get pregnant. Would you have us send them all off to some secret place for the duration just so we aren't personally embarrassed by their missdeed? Having a pregnant daughter share the stage while being nominated for a high office is more sleazy than laughing that God sent a hurricane to destroy New Orleans as a means to hurt the RNC. I simply can't agrue with that kind of logic. |

Dear Mike, I did listen to the Obermann tape. I thought that Moore's comments were uncomfortable and out of line and I didn't like them. I felt embarrassed for him and I'm sorry that he made them. I don't think they're defensible. I hate it when fellow Democrats do that. What did you think of the rest of the stuff he said? I thought he made some fairly interesting comments afterward. Yours, Bob Kaven |

actually, Bob, I didn't listen to the rest of it. After I heard that garbage, which was at the beginning, I turned it off. Michael Moore says nothing that I want to hear. |

Dear Mike, Why listen for the insult, then? It was wretched, but really the least interesting thing he said. It really was a rotten comment, you know, but even Shakespeare's full of them. And it's still a decent question. I'm under no illusion, mind you. But if all either of us listens to are the people who agree with us, we'll miss out on some important ideas. Best to you, Bob K. |

No, Pete, I wouldn’t send a pregnant teen off to some secret place, but Palin did, until she got the nod and then dragged her daughter into the limelight, and started pressuring her into a marriage she didn’t feel ready for. You’re offended by Moore’s tasteless attempt at satire but not Bush’s lies that started a war? Whatever. |
