http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory?id=1411489 think about it. china, korea, iran, iraq, the countless regimes, despots and overlords(many of them installed) that have come and gone..how many of them have suffered what cuba has had to endure? enough is enough, already. and now this? banning cubans from the world baseball classic? only the bush administration could take the most enduring, restrictive and internationally condemned embargo and add to its insanity. |

Now I just saw this one and it really got my passionate Latin juices going. It took a long time to get this out. There was a time, around say, 1980, That Cuba may have been one of the largest and most powerful nations in all history. With its capital in La Havana, its government in Moscow, its armed forces spanning two hemispheres----its army in Angola, its air force in Ethiopia, and half its population dispersed in the United States and the Americas. Today, in socialist Cuba, Old fashioned capitalism and private economic activity have returned, and they has done so through the holes in the American economic embargo. Fidel, in order to feed his people, has had to allow this, because the state can not hope to survive without it. The point made by the embargo is not forcing Castro to step down, since Fidel's opposition has been either exported or thrown in Jail. it is a matter of principal, however inequitably applied. The United States simply can not do business with a Regime that has looted private property, makes a mockery of human rights and civil liberties and democratic traditions and that will not tolerate any political descent. We can not do business with a dictator who has shot, tortured and exiled more Cubans than Batista and visited a tyranny upon them equal to that of the worst Spanish colonials. But we have time, and we have patience. Fidel Castro has neither. In the end, Castro will share the fate of the Soviet Union, even as Saddam will share the fate of Stalin. All headed, as President Reagan remarked, for the dust bin of history. There will indeed be an invasion of Cuba, an invasion of entrepreneurs looking for new markets. And the invaders will be Cubans themselves, bringing hope to its oppressed and long-brutalized people--- Bringing the revolutionary ideas of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Simon Bolivar, Jose Marti and Abraham Lincoln. BTW, the invaders already have a beachhead, perhaps in the swamps of Playa Jiron, in the form of an illegal but nevertheless thriving black market dollar economy, Something that neither President Bush nor Fidel Castro can do anything to stamp out. I just have this feeling President Kennedy, where ever he may be, if he is watching this, Surely he must be laughing. Let Freedom ring! Bahhh I think I can eat dinner now!!! I'm confused. When did President Bush become head of the Treasury Department? The Treasury Department does something, yet it's President Bush actually sitting behind that TD desk signing papers and issuing edicts about Cuba? Last I heard, the Treasury Department answers to Congress, that building for legislators, not the White House, that building of law signing. I'm also a bit befuddled by the veiled threat of blackmail by the International Olympic Committee: let Cuba play, or you might not get the upcoming Summer or Winter game bids? What kinda talk is that, coming from that most respected Committee with no blemish at all on their long esteemed record. I just hope that come the Winter Games, they don't let France judge any more figure skating. |

Alicat, I said Bush Administration. Who appoints the Treasury Secretary? Are the secretary and his chief of staff not members of the Administration? |

Ah, ok. Purely semantics, yet when I've seen other use 'Bush Administration', what they've meant is 'President Bush' in yet another attempt to tar and feather. So my apologies for reading a bit too much into your first post. |
