The magazine Advertising Age is reporting McDonalds is hoping to gain some street credibility and increase sales by reaching out to the hip hop generation. The restaurant chain is offering to pay big-name hip-hop artists if they include references to Big Macs in their rhymes. The fast food company is reportedly willing to pay rappers up to $5 each time songs with the plug are played on the radio. McDonalds has hired the same marketing firm that successfully got five hip hop artists to namedrop Seagram's gin last year in their songs. * So I guess my question here is, "Will this really give McDonalds any credibility at all?". is street cred even an issue anymore? for the most part, the rap industry is a wasteland of egomaniacs who'll slap their name on anything from clothing lines to beverages(crunk juice? give me a break)so it's no surprise that mcDonald's would tap into it. what a joke, public enemy and all the early rappers must be sickened, they were trying to say something, trying to get the black community's voice heard. while these new 'artists' are just puppets, whoring themselves out to whatever uber-rich, uber-white industry is sick enough to throw their way. just another example of corporations undermining the black community, whether its a record label or fast food restaurant. |

Yeah, I think of it as a "joke" as well. Look, there is so much great hip-hop and rap out there. Shamako Noble and Dizzee Rascal are two great examples. They even used to have so much quality urban singles on the radio when Public Enemy really set the standard. I listen to underground rap and hip-hop all the time on KBOO Community Radio. There are so many talented, young voices that have so many meaningful things to say. I even heard a rap song the other day that explained all about Marxism. Didn't expect that! Most rap and hip-hop that makes it to the airwaves nowadays is designed exactly how you put it; it is self-personalized, rather self-righteous and bent heavily on commerical cross-promotion. I feel McDonalds is literally hammering that perception of hip-hop and rap in pure definition deeper into the ground here. And I find what they're doing here to be a dismal sign of the future of commerical rap and hip-hop. Dude,,,,on the same vain,,,,different resteraunt,,,,I saw a Burger King ad earlier,,,,,,using the lil Homies figures, all staring at a breakfast sandwich,,,,to wit,,a voice over tells us,,,its "hella good".......so,,,,it seems the King has already gone down the "hip" road,,,,, sigh |

go where the money is. mcd's is in it for the money. no one, not even they are going to tell you otherwise. they could care less about making a "true" impact on the music world; having their product sported in a song is just a different type of billboard. quote:that's where the money is. right now. let's see if the new resurgence of rock popularity brings in some different jingles next year. egowhores.com - really love yourself. |

Um... when I'm hungry and I only have two dollars of change in my pocket is when I go to McDonalds, not when I hear a song. I don't think it will matter... I don't know anyone who doesn't go to McD's b/c it's "not cool..." although i do know some smart people who won't because it's unhealthy. |

Every time I see Justin Timberlake singing the McDonalds' song, I run out and buy a Filet-o-Fish. Boy I wish McDonalds' advertising schemes weren't so effective! |

I'm with hush...I take my kids to mc donalds when i only have a few bucks left..not when I hear music...most people go to mcD's when money is low, and they are on their way by there anyway..not when someone tells them to go, or they hear it on the radio..except parasite...lol, no harms intended...  ~~SCG~~ |
