The Multinational Monitor is a monthly publication which tracks corporate activity, especially in the Third World, such as exports of hazardous substances, worker health and safety, labor union issues and the environment.

These were ranked the Ten Worst Corporations of 2004:

Abbott Laboratories (for quadrupling the prices of AIDS-fighting drugs like Norvir and discrimination against U.S consumers)

AIG (for prosecution deferrments)

Coca-Cola (for encouraging violence on Colombia's unions by paramilitary force, including nine murders.)

Dow Chemical (for Bhopal aftermath and failing to take responsibility for its actions)

GlaxoSmithKline (for the Paxil controversy, including abnormal mood effects in children and suppressing studies and research of the drug's side effects)

Hardee's (for their heart-attack inducing hamburgers)

Merck (for the 55,000 deaths related to their drug Vioxx, plus suppression of Dr. Graham's questioning and research behind the drug's increased risk of heart attack.)

McWane (for the large number of workplace accidents in the last decade, including 4,600 injuries and nine deaths.)

Riggs Bank (for illegal operation of bank accounts for Chile's former military dictator Augusto Pinochet

Wal-Mart (for employment discrimination, blocking union efforts and inadequate benefits for workers)

I'd say this list was very accurately assembled. Wal-Mart, Merck and Coca-Cola have been three corporations I have been boycotting as of late and have monitored closely.

Hardee's is the sole corporation on the list I would probably disagree with. Consumers should be aware of the nutrition value and calories, etc. in what they eat, and I believe it's their life, it's their choice. If they want to get fat off those burgers regularly, that's their decision, but they should take responsibility for their own actions and what they eat.

In any case, 1,420 calories is ridiculous for a single sandwich. But I'd probably put Taco Bell in Hardee's place instead for their shabby treatment of tomato pickers on their "sweatshops of the fields", or Altria, or Lockheed Martin.
