Okay so this topic is not about rocket science but it is sure something that irks the bejillies out of me on a daily basis. Here's the question okay? When you walk on a sidewalk why the heck don't people watch where they are going, and stay in one lane? Like cars? I admit it that I am a "tad" on the ocd scale, but really, if I am on the right side and they see me coming - then move! (If I were a car would they keep coming at me?) I have been bumped into, shoved off the sidewalk onto roads, bumped into traffic so many times I can't tell you. So, I started this experiment in 2005 - I don't move, and simply stand still and smile at my offender. I say horrible things they can't hear while I am standing there, and wait for them to move or go around me. At a stoplight, I take ground as if expecting an earthquake, ready for any emergency that will come. This is the last year of my life that I am going to move out of my lane! Grrrrrrrrrr! Am I the only nut that feels this? I am willing to listen and try to change but as it stands I am ready to buy protective gear for future encounters if need be. |

This happens to me all the time--in my kitchen! (teenagers yanno)  But it's true, some people just have no sense of personal space, and believe it or not, I've had it happen to me when I was still using that cane too. what a world, what a world... |

Well, the fundamental issue with your move or die theory is that the regulations on sidewalks and streets are so much different. You have governmental stipulations on, which side of the street you drive on. Where on the sidewalks its really open to all who wish to traverse. I do agree with you and wish that others would use the same rules, but I would also hate to be told that I have to walk a certain way on the sidewalk. Who knows! |

I always thought we walked on 'our' right side...so if you are going north, your right side is east..the person coming south has their right side on the west..therefore there should be no collision.  |

That-a-girl stand your ground. How hard is it for foot traffic to keep to the right like street traffic? In harder, less subtle times inconsiderate men would get a shoulder. Guess what....the world only gets more crowded. Poets against the war is redundant |

i dont think you're over-reacting at all. i say horrible thing out loud and most people are STILL oblivious. whats worse are people who take up the entire sidewalk, shopping aisle, mall lane to pause and talk on cellphones or with others. completely oblivious that people are trying to get through. what i usually do is make sure they hear me, i'll actually join them in conversation and add something like, 'that's interesting, i'd love to continue on this theme, but right now i'm too busy trying to get the @#%$ by..' maybe that's not the right way to handle it, but after years of trying to be civil, you realize how uncivilized most people are. shrugs |

You don't know me, but I am dead serious Sharon ~ Well of course you are right! Ron ~ I will never go to Indiana now for certain. This is true, (ask Liz,) when I was in New Yawk I got their language down pat right quick, could have fooled anyone who lived there and did! As a matter of fact, I learned sign language at a very young age, and was married to an Italian once, so I think I might survive there as a cabbie really well. Being that I was always the one to say, "Gun it!" playing chicken in cars in Junior High, I think I have done my practicum too. By the way, Nan knows how this ticks me off, she's walked with me.Richard ~ see my response above about City Hall. Incidentally I wonder what they do in those hot states where no one walks, free for all as you get the entire sidewalk, LOL Raph ~ my Canadian friend, of course you understand! I do the same as you as I hate cel phones period, shopping carts in my way (especially when I am on a mission!) with women chatting drive me insane. I will actually ask to speak to the person on the other end of a cel phone if someones dares talk on one in a restaurant to get the opportunity to hang the dang phone up, then smile and hand it back, saying I paid for silence not to hear your conversation, thank you for understanding. I want to thank you all for I really thought I was loosing it and was the only one like this. Oh, know what I did today? Everyone who was in my path going down the hill on my right got told "Sidewalk Etiquette," and what's more they actually stood there in -3 degrees and listened. Do you think there is a possibly I could run in 2008? LOL |

Oh I did enjoy reading this - it is the little every day annoyances that make for such amusing discussion - and I love your attitude - you stand firm girl - I personally am one of those - I'm going wherever a body isn't kind of walkers - we call it "getting into Disneyland mode", navigating the masses - but if it is a leisurely day, I"m all for staying on my side - hehe - sorry - Enjoyed this - and should I bump in to you on the sidewalk and you stand your ground, I'll smile, give you a hug and walk around -  Susanbtw - am bad about stairs too - i have this problem with left and right and live my life with north, south, east and west -  If I wander far enough, long enough, will I finally know . . . |

Well try being dyslexic! I am going to start wearing a big sign. Same rules should apply to stairs, or any two-way passage to anywhere in my opinion (except in Europe) then reverse them sometimes. I am finding just standing there and holding my ground actually works, well so far! |

LOL, you are "not" alone Sharon. Even my dog and I collide on the stairs daily. She keeps changing the rules! One of my favorite music videos is "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve. The lead singer is just walking down the sidewalk singing, and doesn't move for anyone. He keeps walking straight ahead and bops into anyone who doesn't move. He knocks into them left, right and centre ... even jumps up and walks over the hood of a car that gets in the way in an intersection, lol. Next time I see it, I'll be picturing you, rofl. |
