Interesting ... who would have suspected this in a city where 99% of registered voters cast their ballots in 2000?

As I understand it, those machines have two meters.  One is for current voter counts, the other is for overall voter counts over the life of the machine.  Hopefully, those numbers cited were from the second meter, not the first.

On CNN last night was some woman in politics from Florida, who in a "moment" said, "Don't miss the voting here in Florida, it is the best reality show on television."  I wonder why is it that I am believing her.

Boy I am with Alicat, hope that was the overall count?

Then there's the 30-some-odd disabled GOP rental vehicles with slashed tires in Wisconsin, a vandalized GOP headquarter where someone used lots of black spraypaint, then the lady who registered as Green, voted, then disabled the voting machine.  She tried to do the same to another before she fled.

Good to see that the Democrats and their supporters aren't trying anything shady today.

There's also been the following updates:

* Yesterday a federal appeals court in Ohio reversed two lower court rulings and ruled that Republicans will be allowed to send thousands of operatives into the polls today to challenge the eligibility of voters. A pair of Ohio civil rights activists had sued the state to block the challenges saying they were unconstitutional and that the law allowing the challengers dated back to the Jim Crow Era.

* In Pennsylvania, Republicans have also announced plans to challenge as many as 10,000 voters from west Philadelphia, an area populated by many African-Americans. And the Republicans plan similar challenges in Florida.

* Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle took his Republican opponent, John Thune, and 200 Republican attorneys to court yesterday over allegations of intimidation of Native American voters.

* In Florida thousands of students have learned that not only was their party registration switched to Republican but their home address was changed without their knowledge. This means that when they show up to vote at their local precinct, their names won't appear on the voting rolls.

* In Pittsburgh, fliers were handed out on what looked like county letterhead that claimed voting had been extended an extra day "due to immense voter turnout expected on Tuesday." The fliers said Republicans should vote on Tuesday and Democrats should vote on Wednesday.

* In Wisconsin fliers purportedly from the a group calling itself the "Milwaukee Black Voters League" told voters, "If you've already voted in any election this year, you can't vote in the presidential election, If you violate any of these laws, you can get ten years in prison and your children will get taken away from you."

* In South Carolina, a letter purportedly from the NAACP warned voters they can not vote if they have outstanding parking tickets or have failed to pay child support.

* Late last week, Greg Palast of BBC America, who invesitigated the disenfranchised voters of the 2000 election, uncovered a secret document from the Republican Party in Florida that contains nearly 1,900 names and addresses of voters in the predominantly black and Democratic areas of Jacksonville. The so-called "caging list" could be used to block and harass African-American voters.

********************************************

Despite these tricks and those already mentioned, I feel confident we are far more mentally and physically prepared than in 2000 for possible thwarts and believe this election will run fairly smoothly.

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton

Those you cited, Noah, are indeed dishonorable tactics.  However, last time I checked, vandalism, breaking and entering, destruction of private property (rental car tires), and destruction of voting devices are illegal.  Either party using the legal system to contest and repudiate each other is legal, though tiresome.  I do hope they catch that woman who vandalized that voting machine, since as a convicted felon, she would lose the priviledge and right to vote, just as she tried to deny others that same right.  Just as I hope those attempting such vile practices on behalf of any political party are sought out, apprehended, and dealt with accordingly.

LoveBug:

Agreed.  Interesting that the margin in PA is less than the current margin in OH.

I agree with Alicat on how we ought to treat those who undermine the democratic process.  Nomatter how good the intentions are, suppressing democracy is tyranny and ought to be treated as such.

Well, that's the last thing Tom Daschle will be doing...thank God.

Noah, regardless of the result, you can certainly hold your head up high for the effort, dedication and passion you put into your support for your candidate.

I salute you

One of these days, Jim, maybe we will get all those dead folks off our rolls here in Philadelphia so they stop voting! Any thoughts on how that can happen? I've never had to wait in line to vote, ever, not even this past Tuesday. It has to be the dead folks voting, and lots of voting by mail.

I was also dismayed at how easy it is to register by mail here as well. Is that a common practice around the State? I mean, couldn't someone register more than once and then get the phoney I.D. to back them up, if it was requested of them at the polls? I heard one guy bragging on a talk radio show that he had voted twice by mail, under different identities.

Our mayor twice slammed the G.O.P. on election day, once about the voting machine counter inquiry, and once because they wanted to post G.O.P. watchers at the polls to ensure that no blatant fraud occurred. He wouldn't allow them there at all. He seems to be of the opinion that verifying the validity of I.D.'s and registrations is tantamount to suppressing the vote. It is... it would suppress the fraudulent vote. So if our city had allowed what was allowed in Ohio, I think it's very possible that Pennsylvania would have gone for Bush too.

I really think this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed to ensure fair and accurate voting in the future. Fraud does undermine the democratic process, really makes a mockery of it.

Also, I heard that our governor had ballots distributed to the prisons (maybe to non-felons only, or are felons allowed to vote in PA? I don't think they are but I'm not sure), but only relented on extending the deadline for military overseas ballots until November 10th after his feet were held to the fire on the issue, since the Democratic Party held up the issuing and mailing out of the ballots with their anti-Nader lawsuits.
