Lone Wolf’s Triumph The beautiful maiden on the horse smiled and looked into his eyes If he would ask she’d change course but he must be swift as the eagle flies She knew her people would return soon they would take her away He stood looking so tall and stern how could she her wishes convey Lone Wolf saw she was so full of life and quickly he made a choice He’d ask her to become his wife if she said yes, he would rejoice He spoke to her in a quiet voice indicating his desire for them to wed He prayed that would be her choice he saw her smile and shake her head He pulled her down to the ground and wrapped her in a warm embrace He could not believe this love he’d found should they leave without a trace He looked toward the hills beyond and saw the horses of the Sioux Would they permit a marital bond what would they say and do He pointed toward the men, and she knew he was concerned about their fate She knew what she must do she would set the matter straight The Sioux warriors encircled the two They were menacing and beginning to yell Bravely she walked from the circle through all around a silent hush fell She walked to the horse of an older man and reached up and took his hand Lone Wolf knew she was sharing their plan he must be patient and not demand The man studied him long and hard weighing his character, looking for flaws Lone Wolf waited and kept up his guard would he be sensitive to their cause The older man stepped down and then walked over to where Lone Wolf stood He spoke to him as to a friend indicating their wishes he understood She walked to the older man’s side he gently lifted her hand Giving her to Lone Wolf as his bride for her hand, this was his demand He held up his fingers, and then he said Ten horses for the beautiful Flaming Star Ten horses if she is the one you are to wed He would find them even if he had to go far Flaming Star was the daughter of the Chief who stood before Lone Wolf that day Letting her go was causing him grief it saddened him to think she would go away The wedding was set for the month of June the horses were to be delivered in May For Long Wolf the time could not come too soon until then with her father she would stay Flaming Star climbed upon her horse and then smiled and shyly waved her good-bye He knew, in his dreams, he’d see her again He would work until the horses he could supply He watched them ride away across the hills and felt a loneliness he could not deny He would need to perfect his catching skills He saw the dust in the distance, and gave a sigh Written by, Wanda L.
