The Myth: Real Men Don’t Cry
By Larry Chadwick

My heart is breaking because you’re gone,
And I am using tears to heal my pain.
Being alone isn’t the part that hurts,
It’s that I won’t see you ever again.

Time itself can’t make the ache go away,
Which is why my tears must fall.
Because it hurts to feel my loss,
And missing you is worst of all.

They say that real men don’t ever cry,
But that is just an urban tale.
It is meant to hide the truth,
That real men know how to wail.

So I am using my tears to cleanse my mind,
And make space for love of another.
But never will I leave my memories,
Of when we were in love with each other.

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Larry, I have no clue who ever came up with that myth that men shouldn't cry, but I for one cry all the time yet I am proud I do because I think all men should cry when they are hurt deeply for if we cage our emotions it only hurts us deeper and if we cry, others will open up to us and we can all help each other with compassion! (sigh) My heart goes out to you and your tears, sweet friend, I hope everything is alright, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Larry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Noah,
Sorry, no tears. I thought of the concept of tears cleansing our hearts from a story I heard at church and had to find a way to use it. But certainly concur that it is foolishness to suggest men shouldn't cry. Besides, I could never maintain that facade. And thank you friend.

Thanks for a beautiful poem, Larry...
I know for certain that men DO cry.
All the ones in my life, certainly have...
I find it very touching when a man cries because it means that he's sensitive.
My first husband used to cry at sad movies, more than I did.....my dad always cried at weddings and David cries when I am hurting.
Both of my sons were also sensitive and cried when they needed to......
I think its wonderful when men feel masculine enough to cry without worrying about being judged harshly for it....
I really love the poem

Lyra,
I cry for movies, songs, stories, love, funerals and yes it has caused criticism and no I don't care. Thank you always for your support. It seems there are too many tears in your life...but your courage continues to inspire me. Thank you so much.

Larry,

I enjoyed.  You speak the truth, hopefully all men will listen.

Ok, I'm glad I read your reply to Noah~
Geeez, you had me worried for a minute!

So I am using my tears to cleanse my mind,
And make space for love of another.
But never will I leave my memories,
Of when we were in love with each other.

Cleansing indeed....that verse really got to me!

Have you ever read a poem and found yourself staring at your monitor...tilting your head from side to side...squinting, smiling, or trying your best not to cry?  Sitting back in your chair, crossing over your arms, thinking about how to respond?

Here's to your poem and your reply about maintaining facades~~~~~

You're good Larry!!

Very well written, cry baby. Just kidding. Tears are neither feminine nor masculine, they don't care about gender when they roll down the cheeks. And I always worry about people who cannot cry. My daughter rarely cries, but when she does, it is usually for someone else's pain, not her own. She didn't even cry when she broke her wrist..but I sure did. And I like to cry. It clears all the dust out of my eyes.

Tara,
They won't! But that's their problem. And thanks.

Lori,
Boy could I picture that! Sorry...but I rarely hold back. And thank you for your candid response.

Kacy,
I have no idea what you are talking about. I never cry. And thank you friend.

Thank you for debunking a myth that I learned for myself a few decades ago to not hold any water...I saw a real man cry...and it made him all the more human, and a little taller, in my eyes...

what midnitesun said.
anyone who can't cry has some rather serious problems that they need to deal with.
there is a time and place for everything, and if it's time to cry, then it just is
some things are too hard to be carried any other way.
