red velvet walk
golden statue prize
glittering diamonds
shaded eyes
hands raised waving
multitudes adore
standing at
glory’s door

does this make them
better than
the struggling
unlucky man?
for time and place
holds the key
as much as talent
for notoriety

silver slippers
silken ties
whispered gossips
truth or lies
trading on
your life of fame
is it honor
or is it shame

this struggling poet
no honor endowed
standing behind
star struck crowd
simple lines
upon the page
born and died
an unsung sage
