I'd always felt fine on my own.
It made me feel quite good
to be in charge of my own life
as only singles could.
but everyone kept telling me
in order to survive
one has to have a family
to really feel alive
and so I bowed to their wise words
but please don't ask me why
then said goodbye to my old buddies
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

They were the heroes on the screen
I fashioned my life by.
I made each day adventurous
then, smiling, waved goodbye.
"Come back, Shane!", women called to me
with teardrops in their eyes...
That didn't do for men like me and
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

They were the best - They were so cool!
They knew just what to say.
With brains and brawn they traveled on
to do things their own way.
Men watched with admiration and
the women....with a sigh.
No one could hold a candle up to
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

Oh, there were also others who
would do their best to thrill us -
James Bond, Bruce Lee and Bronson,
not to mention Mister Willis
But, when it came to straight pizzazz
to make one's throat go dry
they were the men that I admired most
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

But now I've traded Double OO's
for Cheerios and Trix.
No more Rambo, no more Rocky
getting in his licks.
No more Dirty Harry....see ya
later, Callahan.
I turned in my Baretta to
become a married man.

So long, man without a name. I
guess I'll see ya later
And, Arnold, seems like I've become
an old ex-Terminator!
I've been you guys for so darned long
it's hard to say goodbye.
You'll always be inside me, fellas,
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

Now, secret agent Balladeer
is in the PTA
and drives a Ranger, not a Porche
to take the kids to play.
Instead of fighting evil, trying
hard to stay alive,
he sits behind a desk five days
a week from 9 to 5.

But, sometimes late at night, the wife
already gone to bed
I sit beside my sleeping children,
gently rub their heads
look down upon their precious faces
and think, possibly,
my buddies, Arnold, Clint and Sly
might wish that they were me....

I had a handle on life...but it broke.

I remember this! I also remember the smile I received, when it made me feel better to know I was not alone...

goodbye Kate, Lee, Katherine...
I've made my own way
you were models, and you shine
I've made my own road
you were gracious, learned and good
and by your art, defined
I've made my own way
I shall leave a mark
but believe me when I say,
knowing you added life to my spark...

Thanks, 'Deer!

’Deer dearest YOU always do that, take me into the story, hook me up and carry me off. This is what I mean when I say you connect with the reader YOU do dearest ‘Deer you do. As always this is perfection but you don’t need me to tell you that, it’s an absolutely shining example of your art. I’ve read this when I’ve been scurrying around the archives, but I’m so glad you re-posted it, because it’s an absolutely fabulous piece of writing.

I couldn’t tell you who my favourite screen legend is, and as for modelling myself on one, well whom do you think I’m most like? No I’m not going to tell you with luck you’ll say Haley Mills in Pollyanna. ……..

I love it and so will Krissy……. But I got to reply to it first yes, two up to me

(giggles in delight) Awwwwwwww, this is sooooo sweet and delightful, sweet friend, I must confess that I am not a huge fan of action movies, but I do admire Arnold and Clint Eastwood and Sly for the inspiration they bring to many, for when I was a boy, I wanted to be a cowboy, and Clint made me smile! (big hugggssssss) You will always be the hero of your family, sweet friend, you have a very loving heart that is bound to surmount every obstacle that tries and hinder you, the poetic Superman! We all love you so much, sweet friend, this is wonderful! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Balladeer, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

I had to phone my son this morning and get him to go read this, as it is so "him".  I wanted you to know he said, boy that is ever the truth!  Many a young man has traded in their sports car days,a nd their super heros for the vans, and the hat of being a little person's hero.  My son also said to tell you it was worth it!  Michael no one weaves those threads of words like you do.

’Deer mum may have got to reply before me but…….. my reply will shine like the stars, and put her measly reply to shame. So now I have to make this brilliant and witty, and all I can think of to say it this is the business. This is an excellent poem I really do love the way you’ve written this. My brother was just such a lone wolf he still is in his way. He has a fiancée and lives in his own house but no one could ever call my bro the settling down type. I suppose that’s to be expected from anyone in my family, mum didn’t raise quiet and subdued children.

Anyway this is an utterly amazingly accurate portrayal of young manhood, and possibly their eventual change into someone mum wouldn’t have a cow over.

I've never read this before, thank you for posting it.  As always, this is poetry perfection!

I think that I said the same thing to your other poem, but, here goes again....this is wonderfully witty with a touching ending.  I love the way you write.  Your wife and children are very lucky to have ya cutie patootie!

but, can I adopt you though?

Sunshine...thank you! I never stopped to think that women would have their own idols, also. Thise gals have nothing on you

floria...thank you. I'm always happy when you enjoy my work..

Sy...shhhhh! You'll kill my nacho, er, macho image!!!

Victoria...glad I can make you smile...makes my day!

mushy...who are you most like? Mushy girl, you are without equal. Women all over the world should be wanting to be like YOU!

noah..Clint was indeed the perfect cowboy without a doubt! Glad you enjoyed...

Mysteria..thank you for sharing it with your son...and, yes, he is right. It is definitely worth it...a good father IS a super-hero to his children, as I'm sure your son is...after all, he's YOUR son!

RosePetal...ok...hasta la vista, baby!!!

krissy...your mum has cows? Doesn't raise subdued children? What information I am gathering here!!! LOL! What an amazing family you must have...you're all super-heroes!

Melissa..there's no wife. I may not be Arnold and Clint but I'm still sly! (and available for adoptions....housebroken and everything!!)

walker...true, none of them are shining conversationalists, are they? LOL! Thanks for reading...

Magnus...I was sure such a strong family man as you would relate to this..glad I was right. I thank you, sir...

Wonderful! I enjoyed this bunches for both it's "sly" humor and it's touching sentiment. As a father of four boys, it warms my heart to know that I am their heroic action star (lol)

Poet deVine...how right you are...and a good mother, too!

Madame C...and I'm sure he deserved to be....easy to see just by looking at you. Glad you enjoyed, Madame chipmunk off the old block

smartchick..your words warm my heart. I appreciate you

jeffrey...I have no doubt you are. Things that seem rather unremarkable to us can look very heroic to a child. We all need to keep that in mind and know how important our actions are to our children. Thanks for reading!

Very cool poem ‘Deer. Glad you reposted this one. Though, touching as this is, it doesn’t make me want to trade in all my toys for a kid!! By the way, I love the sig line too.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

Sigh..I used to have a Rocky poster  LOL. And Clint, I adored him and still do. They are all three the greatest, I agree. And this poem was so good, showing the evolving from one stage of life to another. But I think you and they are managing to mix both a little. The cowboy never goes all the way out of the man..or the boxer..the hero..Does it?
