Where no tyranny is tolerable

Chicken

1:
I am at home
And it is night.
Mother is lecturing us about chicken.
She tells me
To stop asking for more servings
Because there isn't any left.
She says that what is left
Will be for me,
the only son.
My little cousin
Plays in the corner with her doll,
Having nothing else to do,
And nothing to eat.

2:
I find Mother
In the kitchen eating chicken.
I think: What? ... leftovers? ...
She brings me a plate of chicken,
Then another, then another ...
I tell her a crumby joke
I overheard while at Loyola,
Where you weren't supposed to eat meat
But did it anyway.
(even though, in Waking Life
I never went to school there.
And I don't know
I even spelled Loyola right.)

3:
Eat the chicken, drink the wine
Even when there isn't any.
And have a good life,
Even if they say you can't.
After all,
That's what the chicken you are eating
Would be thinking.
The way I figure,
There are two choices:
Either you eat the chicken
Or ... ...
And who wants to be beaten up by drumsticks,
Or get ground up by gizzards?
The common barnyard chicken
is a fat, dumb, bird
That evolution just forgot.

4:
When Prince Charles came to south Texas,
They served him some tamales.
Just remember:
You're not supposed to eat the leaves.
For those up on Cape Cod
Who don't know about tamales,
They fall from trees.
(Sorry, Nan, heehee)

Neither here nor there but somewhere in between or maybe nowhere in particular,
Jaime

LOL, from chicken chicken to word processed chicken. You're right, I wouldn't care to be beaten up by chicken wings. But it's already happened before, ya know? When I took care of a coop with over 100 chickens for a local vet....they didn't always wait patiently for dinner.

Interesting, i admire this piece-not sure if i get it but I admire it-anyway as a student of Loyola, MD I wanted to say you indeed spelled it right!
