The Stone

just yesterday, his hug was warm
lopsided grin so wide
his tawny hair, a tangled mess
my tears have not yet dried

today I bought a stone for him
carved from a mother's tears
her heart broken into pieces
one for each of his years

headstone
tombstone
gravestone
deathstone
he lies beneath the earth
alone

his pall encased in rites of dirt
sealed soft with weedy grace
where saffron sculpted buttercups
are wound with Queen Ann's lace

he slumbers neath the loamy soil
composing dreams of never
he must be late for school, I think
but now, he sleeps forever

How sweet of you to repost this for Rosemary. A mother should never have to feel this pain. My heart goes out to all of who have had to live this nightmare. And there are far too many that have

Lyra

I hear the echo of love coming through the tall grass from the stone, it sings, it sings so sweetly.

There can be nothing more heartbreaking on this earth than loosing a child. The tears never dry.  The natural order of life when this happens is all wrong. But the poem is beautiful and the picture makes me feel as if I can see the flowers swaying in the breeze.
Bless you - Hugs, Marti

Tracey...thanks so much for your reply....
I hope that Rosemary will find this post and read it...and I hope that it offers her some comfort.

Martie...thanks so much for your beautiful poetic reply.  Sometimes I think that your replies are better poetry than my actual poetry...I think that you truly have a poet's heart and mind.

Larry...thanks so much, and I do hope that Rosemary will read it.

Marti...thank you so much for your reply...You are absolutely right...when a child dies before the parent, the natural order of things goes in reverse and everything feels all wrong...it feels totally backwards....and my tears still haven't dried after almost 2 years.

Lauren...thanks so much for the reply and the beautiful compliment

Sy...thanks so much for reading and for enjoying

Floria...I know how much you can identify with this poem...it makes me cry even now as I read it....thanks for replying

Newell...thanks so much for your reply, and for your heartfelt tears and empathy.

Barry...thank you so much for that lovely compliment.

Thank you everyone, for reading and replying to my poem   huggggssss to all of you!
