the key

And we came upon the
castle of love,
all about which walked
the shadows of lovers,

such as
Heloise and Abelard,
Tristan and Isolde,
Juliet and Romeo,
and many others.

And a sign
which read:

Should on this path appear desire
as a light upon the past
and thereby reading sight be cast
on ancient deeds transpired,

would that black fire bleed on this place
a shadow to survive,
brand in stone the urge to live,
or burn this hand in space?

Others have loved so many ways
as one would strike the dawn,
behold the light on meadowed lawns
and sing of rainbow rays.

What comes what may, we suppose, yet
have we seen the measure
of both night and day, and regret
both lost and found pleasure.

Were there a test for love pinned down to these
shadows of joy, some spark of true knowledge
that one might grasp and say Yes, this is Love
and no other, we would not find by count
the number of all failures equaling
even one. Gush if you like, speak of days
to come in gaudy colors, or tell me
of your shocking lust, or speak of reason,
verbose purity, the one logic of true love,

we have seen
many assault these walls with love
in one form or another.
You may count the winners in shadows
of the key.

Wow this is such a wonderful poem, I love the imagery and the language you have used really captured my attention and made me want to read more, thank you for sharing this wonderful poem

Ooohhhhhhh...I just love how you present your poems always, both your words and the music is fabulous, yes, may we all treat the walls of love with loving care and hang all our memories gently upon our heart! Sums up the entirety for me. i didn't check out the music (cause i don't have speakers hooked up) but the poem was well worth it.

As promised, I revisited to read along with the music, and then this line stuck out because of it...
