The Wood Carver He whittled and whittled And whittled away While at his feet Wood shavings lay The wood in his hand He would transform As an artistic piece Was begining to form Then he whittled and whittled And whittled away. With each stroke of the blade His focus stayed His fingers so nimble He remained a symbol Of creativity With proclivity For he understood This fine piece of wood Then he whittled and whittled And whittled away With pipe in his mouth He never did sway From dawn of the morning Till end of the day As all of his feelings He tried to convey A man content On his own peice of land Carving the wood That he thought so grand From tree to the hand Of a whittling man. Wood carving is a wonderful, almost lost art it seems. This is nice. And it made me think of the story of Pinnochio. Sandra |

Floria - I just came back from Victoria which is on Vancouver Island. At the waterfront there are all kinds of artists. Many of them would sit there and whittle away the hours. I'm in awe of there talent, making something out of a piece of wood... BC |

Duncan , thanks so glad you enjoyed it. floria Bill, thats where the inspiration came from. My daughter and her husband were in Tennessee and brought me back a carving done from a piece of wood. How amazing it is. I also am so much in awe of that kind of talent..To take a piece of wood and be able to create such art is so awesome. Thanks for your reply Bill....floria Floria |

Hello Floria I just had to read this one after reading the title. It instantly reminded me of my Dad and how I used to watch him carve from pieces of wood. I remember the hardened skin on his hands from working with wood along with many cuts and blackened nails. He loved his craft and this showed in his fine work. Thank you for bringing back some wonderful memories. Take care......Sue Suetang |

Like you, I like to watch a man work with his hands. I like to watch a woman weave a rug, a man give his boat a tug, a woman kneading bread so well, a man with his hands, a story tell... Yes, I like this Very Much. |

This is so very well done, Floria... I think you carved this one out of your vivid and beautiful imagination the way a wood carver carves a statue out of a tree. copyright2002 Lyra Nesius |

Floria~ My Bill is a woodcarver ... he makes the wood talk~ This is a lovely tribute to those who bring the wood to new life~ I was also reminded of the crafting of the wooden flutes ... the ancient Indian art of making the wood sing~ Thank you for this nostalgic reminder of what was and is~ *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |
