I have a problem.

I have 30 years worth of 'life' that I need to sift through. What do I keep? What do I give away? What goes in the yard sale? What do I do??????

Sorry, can't help you there. I'm the type of person that keeps everything. I even have all my old ATM receipts. I don't even bank there anymore. To me everything is a symbol of my past. But if you really want an opinion, give up the old clothes and keep everything else.

I'm going to have the exact same problem in 15 years. Actualy I'm going to have that problem in about 5 years or so. When I go to college or move out of the house.
I want to keep like everything. Can I take the carpet with me? lol

I guess I'd keep whatever has sentimental value, (for me that's practicaly everything)

Could you live w/o it, emotionaly or phsyicaly? Then out it goes!

LOL you know how many times I've been in this predicament? When you tend to look at the WHOLE picture, it becomes overwhelming.

Pick one room! Then one corner of that room.
Start sorting through stuff. Rule of thumb.
If I haven't wore it, looked at it, used it in a month or more, I won't need it.

I'm one that's good for going well, maybe it might come in handy. Maybe I might need this. And then it becomes difficult to get rid of anything.

If someone else can use it, it goes in the garage sale. If someone else wouldn't be interested in it, and you haven't used it in a couple months, then it goes to the garbage.

Once you get started, and have really "gotten" rid of some things, it then gets easier to do the rest. By the time you're done, you'll be throwing things over your shoulder going, not taking it, garbage. LOL

Seriously, I have many, many boxes of books. Even all the weeding out I did with the many moves, I still have at least 5 boxes worth of 'stuff' in the garage. I've been here 2 years, and I guess they could have gone, because I haven't missed them thus far.

Hi Miss in knee deep, "hehe"

I live in a rather small house and have three teens, so space is really tight so once I desided I was no longer going to trip on something EVERYTIME I wanted to reach another room I got rid of everything not needed to live, I am the one who suports T.J.Max or should I say used to (pating self on back) I started a pile or should I say mountain in the basement and once a year I go through it and get rid of everything just like WhtBove said, by then I have'nt used it and there for don't need it, I also found that if you know someone in need its easyer to give it away and it helps out someone to. I found when I used to have yard sales I would end up keeping some of the stuff I put in the sale to get rid of, plus we can not have yard sales on this hill there is NO Parking single lane road, so anything I didn't give away goes to Good Will, I would come help but you are rather far away, Good Luck,,,

Love, Cerenity

I'm a total packrat. I have drawings and photos done when I was teenager, and books I bought even before that. The only reason I don't still have old clothes is because they seem to, uh, shrink every few years.

Four years ago, when I moved from California, I had a four-bedroom, 3500 sq ft home that was full of "stuff." I rented absolutely the biggest truck possible, and still had to get rid of "stuff." Full gym. All my yard and pool furniture. Enough plants to start a small nursery. Lots and lots of "stuff." Almost four years later, most of the "stuff" I packed is still in storage. And ya wanna know something? I haven't found anything yet that I really miss.

It's all just stuff.

Sharon, books do NOT qualify as "stuff."

Leave the furniture. Forget the clothes. But pack the books.

The books are like parts of ME!! I have NEVER been able to give away a book...Some are dog eared from reading them over and over. Some are so old I am afraid to open them too often. Some hold treasures of old newspaper clippings...

Who do you know that has the complete set of 1932 Good Housekeeping magazines? Me.

Who do you know that has 3 extremely funny (no not meant to be) 'manners' books? Me.

Who do you know that has 9 HUGE dictionaries (like all your phone books together would make ONE). Me.

Who do you know that has 7 yearbooks dated from 1922 to 1931 (not a relative in the bunch). Me.

I could no more leave these behind than I could stop writing. They are my treasures....

I hear ya PdV. Most of my stuff is with Heather in Oregon...there was only so much I could pack in two 1970-era Army duffle bags. Now, on those occasions when I had all my life with me, well, about every 6 months I'd go through everything (except books). Papers got sorted into definately need and hefty bag. Clothes (except for winter wear) got divided into have worn over the last 6 months and still fits/good shape, and everything else which always stayed in the closet. The latter category got put in a hefty bag and taken to a local shelter. (But since I'm slight of build, I'm not sure who would be able to fit into those things....) My IDIC (Infinite Diversity, Infinite Category) boxes got thoroughly sifted through, and usually ended up a lot emptier.

Perhaps all this sorting is psychological, being a deep rooted reaction to my mom, who saves EVERYTHING. She still has magazines from the 60's, all fused together into one lump, which she still plans on making a scrapbook out of with the clippings. When I was down there in 99, she still had closets stacked with solid lumps of fused wood pulp.

Sharon TAKE the books! Just cause the boxes are heavy, doesn't mean you can't take em.

Things like that can't be replaced, take em.
Don't make me come out there and pack your house. I'm an expert at it now ya know. LOL

I'm moving acire - sometime this next year (after September). Destinatin now is Florida - to be near my daughter. Though I am tempted to park in New Orleans! And I want to get a smaller place, I have a three bedroom house now and will end up in a two bedroom condo I think. I have very simple tastes - a chair, a bed, some books and my computer!
