For those of you who want to really work on your poetry, the structure of it, the subtlety of it, etc., please start posting in Sanctuary.

Myself and a few others had a meeting a few weeks ago via computer, and wanted to offer a true sanctuary from the sometime overrun main forums.

This is not to say that the verse in said forums is bad, just that there is so much information, it is impossible to process it all. To the point that some begin feeling left out or that PIP is a set of cliques.

If you're not afraid of critiques and are willing to get deep and dirty into your craft, by all means, we need you.

It's not about perceived talent. It's not about "bumping". It's about learning, and just celebrating the love of words.

Join us.

And it's not the CA forum..and not going to be their competition. This is a respite for the weary poet to take their time and not worry about anything but writing better.

call to arms
fingers respond
a type of reach
to go beyond
I pray,
that I find clarity
and ease of joy
in song...

call to arms
shall I append?
tell me I'm
not wrong again...

call to arms
my heart does long--
I'll be there.
bells on toes
and trying to type a song...

I'm bumping this up.  Seems that "Teen" has gone back to the teens once more, and in light of that, I'm the latest Sanctuary enthusiast.

Hopefully Sanctuary will have the standard for thoughtful replies that I remember Teen having, with the standard for maturity that I remember Open having.  We can make this forum work if enough of us really want a place that can boast these qualities.

It will never be that big, Alex.  It's too exclusive, and people have to either go to today's topics or get really curious in order to even know it exists...

I'm thinking we could generate about 10 devoted regulars and make it a very satisfying forum.

I posted in Poetic Haven when it had just opened and found it a little too quiet, so I went back to Open. I'll keep the Haven in mind for my next post though. I happen to love learning more and more and more... one of the reasons the Poetry Workshop is my absolute favourite, or perhaps I'm just too chicken to post in CA.

Hope to see you there soon, Munda...

With any luck, Sanctuary will become the destination of poets... those who have become aware of how much they are yet to grow, who wish to truly learn and understand poetry, will have a home in Sanctuary.

Oh, and anybody who posts in there is guaranteed to get a reply from me.  There's incentive for ya.

Expanding (gently) the Sanctuary is a good idea, MC. Most of my poems are generated by the spontaneous combustion method.   Sometimes I want to go back three days later wanting to fix a booboo, but the SW doesn't allow me to make a change after 24 hrs. Can this limitation be lifted, so we can really WORK on a poem and make changes if we like someone's suggestions?
Perhaps this should be a Q and A post?

I don't think the 24 hour rule can be lifted for just one forum. But it wouldn't be a problem to just keep replying to your poem with updates until you're satisfied with the result and then post it again as the 'final' version.

Rewrites, of course, can be done in either the Critical Analysis Forum or the Workshop.  You can then still post a final version in the forum of your choise.  Doing the same from the Sanctuary wouldn't work because it would fall under "Cross Posting."  You can also let a forum moderator know if you reeeeally need an edit...

And besides... the nature of Sanctuary seems to want us to have more of a generalized growth in poetry than a specific one.  If you can't edit your poem right off the bat, doesn't mean you can't take the comments under advisement and remember them for a later date.

quote:
For those of you who want to really work on your poetry, the structure of it, the subtlety of it, etc., please start posting in Sanctuary.

The way Mike said this made me think of Sanctuary as different from CA, because it focuses mainly on the individual growth of the writer, as opposed to the individual growth of the poem.  Work on your poetry, not on that one poem, but the way you write poetry... the way you regard poetry, the way you value the different aspects of poetry.  The goal for us would be to improve ourselves, overall, as writers.

Maybe I'm wrong... but that doesn't happen too often...

That's exactly it, Parasite. Critical Analysis is wonderful for working hard on fixing whatever poem you post there. But this forum will be more for the overall body of work -- what lessons you can learn about your strengths and weaknesses.

I love the direction this is going. Keep the dialogue open.

Mike

I thank you all for your input and feedback on my comment. I do like the CA forum, and 'fixing' one specific poem is always rewarding, especially if it's a poem I've already reworked a few times and still find it lacking.
I'm working on an idea now that is so rough it scratches my mind. LOL, maybe I'll post it here, as I welcome all constructive criticism. I love the open forum, but sometimes I feel I'm just getting stroked, and only a brave handful have ever made any comments about the form or structure of my posts. I even hesitate to call much of it poetry. But I love the comraderie and interaction, so I'll probably still post there often.
I've also recently submitted a few things to the corner pub, and enjoy that forum immensely, as well as Dark. This site offers so much diversity, I only regret I can't read every post every day!

Thanks again Ron, for providing us with this tremendous opportunity, and to all the moderators who give so much time and energy to make this site a dream come true.

Before we started the 'Friday night open mic' posts, I asked Ron if it was ok to have so many posts by one writer. He said this is OUR forum - Senior Members. And he didn't feel it would interfere.

I don't think I'd consider posting the same poem twice or even 3 times in the Sanctuary as multiple posting.

We're here to become better poets..and if editing a post can't be done after 24 hours, then we need to be forgiving.

I love the idea of growing poetically...not just working on one poem.

Maybe we can start by kicking my muse is the butt and get her to open up!! I'm tired of being unable to write!!!

Ron did indeed say that we can post several poems in this forum during the "open mic" meetings.  That has nothing to do with cross posting though.

We shouldn't be posting the same poems in a second forum.

Great to see you guys involved... I'd have to say that it looks like Sanctuary is starting to really expand, while still having that level of comfort that comes from a small crowd.

It's great to see some involvement in that forum...
