Saluting with misty eyes

0 posted 2005-08-01 11:11 AM

I was going to set the world aflame
Light the sky
Make my name public
Leave awe and fear
In the eyes of all who crossed my wake
I was told I could do it
But I was only seventeen

I was going to amass power unknown
Dominate
Rule the world totally
Make the world kneel
And supplicate themselves before me
I was told I could do it
But I was only seventeen

I was going to be the richest man
Burn money
Lend it to the banks
No poverty
As I provide a job for all who want
I was told I could do it
But I was only seventeen

I was going to save the world again
Kill and Death
Fight a war for them
Protect them all
And give them the rights they didn't have
I was told I must do it
But I was only seventeen

An interesting read Ringo, I'm only twenty two and already there are things that I would go back and change because even though I have turned things around in my life, I feel as though I have lost the ability to fulfil my dreams.

Susan- Thank you for reading... and for serving... both are always appreciated.

Sue- Yes I am older than 17... that's why the line reads:

I WAS seventeen

lol.

Uh... I just realized... this thread is "sue" happy... does that mean I should be worried???
lol
OK, OK... sorry... it had to be said.

Idealism has been on my mind lately.  One thing I haven't been thinking about is the fact that people tend to feel as though they're under pressure when the weight of their ideal stands in front of them, dressed as destiny.  It's something that's never happened to me, and I think I'm missing out on a lot because of that.

Poems written in the past tense, especially when they reach back to youth, always have a kind of nostalgia that tugs at the heart.  I remember being seventeen, and I also remember hearing people that talked about these things to the left and right of me.

Great post, Ringo.

Brian: We are all tested in different ways. Thanks for reading.

Walker: Thanks for bringing back an old scribble and for commenting on it.  I enjoyed reading it again.

Oh those moments, when we felt so omnipotent...and that feeling proved just how very seventeen we really were....this one takes me back!

Thanks for bringing this one back up, Ed. I don't often go back to see what I've written, and it was interesting to see where I was then compared to now.
