It has been a long time since I've written, so keep that in consideration as you read this :P
~~~~~~~~~~
Dear God,
What love you have given to me!
How is it that a mortal can love so much
With such unwavering beauty?
Can it really be true?
He has made me smile
Through the hardest of times
Gotten me through so easily
Loving me so readily
The way that I love him
He changed me into a better woman
So that I don’t even want to look back
On who I used to be
Dear God, I thank you
And yet, what hate I still can see
In those surrounding me
I know if they knew of how I love
It would hurt them
They would hurt me
To try to make me stop
To change my mind
To see things their way
I’m colorblind
I will not waiver
I will not bend
I will stand firm
For I wonder… would they have accepted You
If they saw You
Dark skinned, Middle Eastern
Walking in the deserts of Palestine
For I see them now
In their clean churches
Whitewashed, spotless
With a painting of a blue eyed man on the wall
And I think of Your sermons
In the dust, in the mud
On the sea
Who is dirty, who is clean?
What is black… what is white?
Oh, make me Thine forever
And should I fainting be
Lord, let me never ever
Outlive my love for Thee
Oh... That's beautiful. I second that.
One thing that stopped me when I was reading it though, was the word 'gotten'.. maybe it's just that I have a personal vendetta against this word because I don't really consider it to be one, but I think it hurt the overall feeling of this poem a little.. just a thought.
Bless your cotten sockies, you poetic maniacs. ^_^
Love - Lynne
"Who is dirty, who is clean?
What is black… what is white?"
Precisely!
Dang! For a youngun (nothing personal...I'm 33 outside, but pushing 70 inside) you sure know how to pack a powerful punch. And you touched on an interesting point, one that has brought me wry amusement over the decades (both inside and out) of the Anglosized Christ, of the emaciated carpenter who knew not Black&Decker, of the smooth-cheeked cherub pasty in murals. So yeah, this one also made me chuckle in my wry sardonic way, for as some pundits say Man created God, so did some create Christ...in their own hygenic sterilized Betty Crocker image. Hrm...I'd better stop a'for I needs a lie-down.
Beautiful and touching poem.  As far as form, it was not a technical beauty.  However, in the world of spirituality it definitely has my approval.  You have done a good job of making use of the apparent contemporary racism against those of Middle Eastern descent in attacking the hatred in others.
