I worry about revolution.
It's such a long and convoluted
caste system of syllables.

As we strive to achieve
the goals of others
(we call it a job),
I worry about revolution.

When I wake up in the morning,
having dreamed of marbles
sparkling on a marble floor,
I slip on their meanings

and they go scattering
like bugs in the dark.

And I worry how a chunk of rock
would fit in my hand precisely enough
to break a storefront window.

When I eat my cereal
sogged in milk, clinging to my spoon,
I taste the horsey oats
and wonder about revolution.

Are we workhorses,
and, to strain the metaphor even further,
are we going to be shot in the legs
when we're through bleeding the race?

I worry about revolution on the freeway.
The sun sparks off cars like some secret code
and I take my turn almost too late --

I swear, the same car is always
in the lane I need to be in,
a dusty blue Tercel with flag decals.

And does that driver worry about revolution
as she turns the knobs on her radio?

As I walk tidily into the building
and arrange my pens for the oncoming day
of workforce activities,
I worry about revolution.

Until my boss calls me in,
to ask me of my previous day's haul.

And I worry about revolution,
as I head back to my office,
the sound of my typing
like marbles hitting the keys.

I am achieving your goals,
I say silently to no one.
And that is the first teetering step
to a staircase marked with questions.

I know it's over.

slipping on their meanings...
yes, much of what goes on in the world of politics seems to based upon a foundation of very  slippery thinking

PS thanks much for that wonderful email!

The only reason we worry about revolution, instead of revolting, is because we're so complacent.

Still, I've been reading so much lately that criticizes the modern western way of everyday life, that this is a very fitting contribution to my current state of mind... I'm fresh off Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" and a few more chapters of Huxley's "Island" that I've managed to squeeze into my reading schedule... and here it comes again, another point-and-laugh reading, this time with more pointing than laughing, which makes me cynically smirk at the entire world in which I've been living.

Oh how I love it, being able to enjoy and equally condemn this political river in which we're all being thrust hopelessly downstream, not without a paddle, but with the illusion of a paddle which can only paddle the direction we're headed anyways... me, I don't worry about revolution, because I know it's never going to happen.  There are too many people like you, Mikey, who worry about revolution.

I admit a part of me even hopes for it.  But you know, there's plenty to be done if you wish to escape the world you live in.  Aside from having to work in order to sustain yourself, really take the time to look at your spoon after you've swallowed the last of your breakfast cereal.  Look at the spots of milk and the oats that are hanging off of it.  And before you make any conclusions, come to understand those.

Those goals can be yours too, you know.  Even if you're being pumped money to fulfill someone else's needs, in order to fulfill your own... this is just a simple exchange, the benefit can be yours if you set your goals someplace other than the source of your income.  Even if you weren't there, typing out documents to make someone else rich, someone else would be in your place doing the same thing.  Is it such a difference, who you work for, if it doesn't change the fact that it keeps you alive?

Revolution is nothing.  You can't destroy the political world, and nobody's going to help you... all you can do is tolerate it, and maybe sit back and laugh at how convenient a place the planet Earth can be, once you learn to make it yours.

Just my handful of pennies.  Thanks for giving me the chance to think... it's a nice activity for between classes.

Ah, you missed the joke.   I don't worry about revolution at all. In fact, this is poking fun at complacent behaviours. Really, do you think I worry about revolution every step of the morning, or at all?

Read between the lines. And glad to make you think.

Not a problem, Brian. I don't go out of my way to make these things clear. I like interpretations.

Always glad to have you read my stuff.
