Lost Memories By Paul Wilson Window to past opens again thinking of the love ones she lost To always keep them in her mind her promise… no matter the cost She sits in silence…eyes open looking at pictures in her mind Searching for that which she has lost memories… she will never find Each day she faces a new world hoping to find that which she needs Looking out the window for hope please God… answer my prayer she pleads She remembers the times they shared special times spent in wedded bliss Moments bring comfort to her mind now gone… replaced by emptiness As time passes each day she cries wondering if she said goodbye Looking out her window again crying… and she doesn’t know why No visitors again today always alone or so it seems She wouldn’t know them anyway loved one’s or those within her dreams She wonders what tomorrow brings when she can’t remember today Is there a cure for this disease that takes our memory away “Alzheimer’s Disease” ~~~ "To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you" [This message has been edited by Paul Wilson (01-15-2003 10:27 PM).] |

What this poem means to me and where I got my inspiration By Paul Wilson When looking at the picture, I got the feeling of loneliness and staring out a window waiting or looking for someone but not sure what or who. The lady in the picture reminds me of the following. I wrote this poem while thinking about how when some people get old, they get Alzheimer’s disease. The old lady in the picture makes me think that she is sitting by a window waiting for someone to come back home, but she doesn’t know who or what she is waiting for. Perhaps her Husband because this disease causes the mind to regress until no memories are left. While looking out the window she’s reminded of the times spent together with the one she now waits for, only to forget who she watches out the window for. From time to time her mind reminds her of past love and happiness from days gone by, then these memories disappear. The pictures in her mind come and go as she keeps her vigil by the window each day. As the pictures in her mind fade in and out, eventually fading away forever. She still cries but can’t remember why, because Alzheimers has destroyed her memory. Her mind is empty of all remembrance of her past life, and she has one last desire, to be with her loved one forever, even though she can’t remember him, because her heart can still feel his love. My inspiration for this came from my heart and hoping that there could be a medical breakthrough and a cure could be found for this disease that robs us of our precious memories, because when we get old and lose our loved ones, all we have left is our memories of those special times in our life. I really enjoyed this piece, Paul - It's a wonderful introspection of all of the thoughts running through an elderly mind. My own grandmother sits by her window with her own 99 year old thoughts and memories. Thankfully.... |

It is, indeed, a heartbreaking state of affairs... I enjoyed your poem, and your thoughts. We can only hope that someday we can work towards treatment of this illness... Thank you for sharing. Parasite "Faith" means the will to avoid knowing what is true. |

Nan~ So glad your grandmother still has her memories. Thank you so much for reading and your lovely reply. I often write about how others feel and try to put myself in their shoes.Glad you enjoyed, as you can see i'm working on my meter, but still haven't gotten the stressed, un-stressed thing right yet, so I will keep trying...Paul "To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you" |

Paul, I just found this one. It is indeed a very good writen display of your sensitive feelings and understanding. I have a neighbor going through this now and it is very sad to watch it progress. "late" |
