She walked Bourbon Street hating it for the tourist the way it no longer was the way to see the real N'Awlens But loved it for the memory Jack had brought her here the first time she came and long before she lived here riding a pan head he stumble stuttered it in a loping idle to a curb and they had walked the street up one side down the other watching people just watching cause neither had much in the pocket They found a place at the end of what was even then Tourist haven and went in for a beer Jack's treat after he borrowed 5 bucks from her She remembered thinking sadly about him and how one night Arm full of needles he had cashed out while his buddies too stoned to know had let him lie there dead until late the next morning She needed to run too many ghost here even in the tourist trap for her not to be haunted not to feel older than the facades on some of the bars She walked Bourbon Street one last time to capture the salt of tears |
