Amy’s Hair & Other Tales
©2001 Christopher Ward

I pause,
     a step away from chase;
  lean on a doorframe
-wood rust and gray -
      heave a sorrowed sigh.

and in the wake of exhaled breath,
Amy’s brunette ponytail bounces to the tune
            of her angry gait.
     crashing heel to asphalt
  slide over to cobalt blue,
       the Malibu she calls “Mandy.”

those chestnut tresses swing,
dance about her face as she plies the door open…
       hinges worn, squeaky and rough.
strands caught at the gentle press of flesh
where lips transform from a kiss,
to peach traveling down her chin.

     glaciers stab through fluorescent green
   while spiked fingernails picked
      one-
      by-one-
by-one at damp curls floating lightly
             in the summer night’s wash.

       shiver in the warm night.

I’ve never been able to stand straight
in the face of that glare.
            icy chill,
      it stabs through flesh and will;

     she always forms me undone.

    legs turn protoplasmic,
and it’ll be days,
     maybe more,
before she comes back to rebuild my spine,
free me from the jellyfish depression which follows
every time she shoots black hate,
   without mercy,
from “Mandy’s” three-inch exhaust.

    smooth tires
deposit patches of non-degradable rubber,
  marking innocent asphalt
         (see the similarities here?),
I feel the black ocean crawl onto my back
    groans press into burbling protestations.

  give in,
shuffling finned feet
across the beaten threshold of my prison.
     walls scream aquamarine,
  but I don’t see.
the floor whispers bright white sand,
but I don’t feel.
the world beckons life and light,
       but bones crumble
beneath the weight of angst and self-pity.

the door slams,
a wash of hopelessness crushes me to my knees.
     shamble, ramble, stutter,
slide across the splintered wooden floor,
      drag despair inch-by-inch,
            sob by heart-rending sob.
then,
   stop.

the door?
open, a rush of air, breath and,
   Amy?
she returns, mermaid breasted and hair bound.
   she takes my hand.
    back?
I stand, spined again I walk.
her eyes pierce mine and comments,
“I was only going to the store.”

I pause,
     a step away from chaos;
  lean on a doorframe
-wood rust and gray -
      heave a happy sigh.

THANKS.

Nice write through anxiety's pen. Can't say I understand all the references...but then? I NEVER could say that...sigh...but the feeling translates and I felt the worry...and as always, you made me think.

Bravo! A chuckle here and there, serious feeling of sadness, then that relief at the end.

Chris your writing amazes me! You really gave an image to bring the reader into it, with your wise imagery.

You....you.....you Resident Passionate Miscreant, you!!!!  Had me going on a very intense emotional ride with such tangible adjectiles and scintillating imagery, only to be buried beneath a canine's co-dependency wrapped in sardonic humor. You cad!!!!

I feel so uuuuuuused.

Chris.....
Awesome of you to grace us with such an
"on the edge of my seat" piece.
I felt as though I were going to explode from anxiety,
then,..... a HUGE sigh of relief at the end!
Not to mentions, the images that you sketched should be framed
with excellence!
Superior job! :D
And again, nice to see you.

Hey - thanks y'all for your time to comment on this! I had fun going outside myself (I'm usually so self-centered that I can't write poetry about anything but direct life experiences!) and presenting a little twist at the end. Ali, you nailed it exactly, bringing up words I'd not thought to associate (canine co-dependancy) even though it fit exactly what I was trying to portray!

Peace,

C

Christopher~
This is a compelling piece.
Perhaps you should go outside more often.
Great admiration from this poetic corner.

Another wonderful piece from you, my friend. I, too, was surprised by the ending, but that helps give it its charm.

well done, Chris! This is so neat! I'm going to add this to my library, 'coz i can't stop smiling.. I'm not quite sure what it is that u've done with this, you've kind of implied everything, and not told us anything.. and that's good poetry..   one effect I've been trying for for ages, and haven't quite 'got' yet.. nope, i definitely admire this piece..
