Rons' "dinner time" piece made me recall the General Store that my parents once owned. I recall a time Long ago On a hot summer day Before I knew how to think A grubby, feral creature Sitting atop a kerosene tank In the gravel parking lot Beside the General Store With a cold orange soda And a can of Vienna Sausage It was a time When cars, were great mechanical beasts When you always looked up to see a plane When a dog was just another kid Who couldn’t throw a ball But could run really fast Nope, No thoughts of school or of war No thoughts of politics or women Not a thought about nothin’ at all Except, perhaps How does one go about fishin’ That first little sausage Out of that tightly packed can? Wranx, Reminds me of a Faulkner story I can't remember the name of at this hour. But it featured a description of deviled ham in cans that stayed with me. As does this. |

wonderful poem, vivid words, I can almost taste those vienna sausages. Could be cos I haven't eaten yet. Too early for the rainbow, too early for the dove These are the final days, this is the darkness, this is the flood |

I'm digging around tonight, and struck gold! My parents used to own a little store, and this brought back lovely little memories. I used to sit under the counter and watch the little old b&w tv, eating peanut-butter and crackers. There was a method to it, too. Sweet, innocent simplicity. I needed the reminder. Loved this! |
