Is This a Friend?

Is this a friend, the one you know and love
Whose laughter fills a void within your days?
Bestowing favors, hovering above
Each act and word, embracing all your ways?

No, no, this is no portrait of a friend
But rather a companion of your mind
Acquaintance in your life that in the end
May leave your spirit faltering behind

A friend is one for whom you’ve carved a space
Within the deepest chamber of your heart
And knowing she is always in that place
From which her essence never more will part

A friend is one who sees you on the edge
Of falling into darkness and despair
And leading you so gently from the ledge
In silence takes your place abiding there

A friend is one who dances in the wind
To celebrate the victories of your goal
Engraving golden trophies of your win
Into the fondest memories of her soul

A friend is one who lets you live your days
To be with one you chose to love and wed
She understands you’ve walked your separate ways
And honors your domain, your home , your bed

She joins you at your table, shares your bliss
She takes your children into warm embrace
Then leaves you with a warm and loving kiss
And closes back the door of separate space

A friend can sense a troubled heart afar
Without an invitation to appear
She opens wide the window of your heart
And whispers tender words into your ear

All these things bestowed within your trust
Would be returned to her in equal weight
Not by the scale of obligation thrust
But by the love that stands at friendship’s gate

So difficult a true and loving friend
So blessed is he who has one in the end

I know what Sy says is true,
if you have but one, or two
May we both say, my Lady Santos, dear,
we are blessed, as we're surrounded, here

This is almost like a divine proclamation of a "friend" it's an amazing
analogy of what a friend is.  Wonderully done in every way.

This is so special Liz, as you are all of the things required of a true friend mentioned in this poem.  I think perhaps that is why you are surrounded in the love of true friends.  This is my latest "favorite".  I should start the "Santos Pick Of The Week", oh I think I just did, and this is my pick for this week!  (hugs)

They say a friend is someone who stands beside you when you're beside yourself....you say it much better. I would like to be counted as one of yours

I have always said that a friend is someone
who stands beside you when your enemies are
throwing rocks at you...

I believe you have said this...though much
more eloquently than I have..

Well done Liz...very well done..
