There was a gentle storm that day.I know Because the Spring was always meant for rain – The friendly sort – a drowsy, tender blow; Delighting frogs, and gilding sugarcane. The rare and welcome breezes, when they chose, Were sultry as a lover’s sated sigh: A dreaming, haunting, murmuring repose Of ocean-born and sun-warmed lullaby. And so it was, to cicada’s acclaim Or thunder’s throaty chuckle overhead, A child into this earthly daydream came, Her heart to songs of wave and weather bred. No foreign sun, it seems, can ever warm This child conceived of sea, and born of storm. ... what if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about ...? |

You've been gone for an age and a day...it's about time you showed up...but when you do? The storm is raging... very, very good... |

Thanks Sunshine, it has indeed been a long time ... I was fully prepared to duck rotten tomatoes from the regulars for daring to show my errant byline here again ... Truth is, my life has not been much poetry of late. Had there been anything to share, I would have posted it. And had I been in a poetic mood, I would have been reading and replying more ... This piece may seem a bit puzzling to anyone who has never visited or lived in Florida, as it is written very much from a "native" perspective. I find it amusing that as much as I ranted and raved about wanting to get out of that "godforsaken" state, my Gator blood still misses it sometimes. Or maybe it's just cold up here. EDIT : Sharon, you sneak, you slipped in while I was replying. Thanks for the welcome back, and I am glad you enjoyed. You can thank Michael for making me finish this when I had intended to scrap it. Not only is this a perfect sonnet but your ability to express a poem from both the visual and emotional aspect are second to none. I think one might be a little homesick here... maybe we'll take a trip back east soon, babe. Love Ya, Michael P.S. - and I agree with everyone else here - It's darn good to see you writing again - hope you do more soon. |

What a wonderful work of art! I've lived in Seminole country, so I have a small understanding of your feelings for the flora and fauna, and the breezes that can blow away the heat of the dog days. Your poetry is delightful. Glad to meet you! |

So much for 'not being known' anymore, eh Linda?... You'll never have anonymity around here m'friend... Your work is as exceptional as ever.. Someday you and I should have a poetic duel - Ya think?.. Oh - I would've been here sooner - but I was driving home from Florida??... |

ARGH! I had written a reply which adressed each of you in turn, but having been so long absent I was ignorant of the 5-images limit, and so my entire thing got wiped. Grrr. So let me just thank you all for the welcome, or the welcome back. _Linda |

SkyFyre~ A stunning return of your ink~ I can certainly relate to the beauty of all of Florida's calling in this piece~ 'No foreign sun, it seems, can ever warm This child conceived of sea, and born of storm.' Really enjoyed this closing couplet~ Very nice to read you again~ Hope it warms up for you ... but you can always 'Come on down !'~ *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

HEY! Where did this come from? And here ya go...iambic pentameter (the dragon that I have yet to slay!) Once again, I read you and wonder how do you do it? I wish someone could explain it to me. HINT. Thank you for writing it, thanks to Michael, for making you, and thanks to Marge for bringing it back to the top where the oblivious one (ME) could SEE it. Into my library for future study! |

Exquisite piece of writing. You handle the form well and the read itself seems natural and flows. Hard to do! |

Wow. I can't believe the kind of response I received on this poem. I expected it to be the "slide down the page, die quietly" sort. Thank you all so much for your words of encouragement and praise. Edit: speling (heh) as usual. Linda [This message has been edited by Skyfyre (01-13-2002 10:42 PM).] |

"The rare and welcome breezes, when they chose, Were sultry as a lover’s sated sigh: A dreaming, haunting, murmuring repose Of ocean-born and sun-warmed lullaby." This is beautiful Linda! The cadence and rhyme is superb throughout, and the imagery is vivid and moving. I can almost feel the soft breezes and hear the cicadas from here. Thank you for this lovely read, very much enjoyed seeing both you and Michael here. Best wishes, /Kit |

I came back to read again and save this one. You deserve praise and recognition for this. Just wanted to come back and save this to remind me of why I started writing in the first place and what it means to me. Thank you for a wonderful write and the inspriation that went with it. Kathleen--(Kay) |

I didn't actually read this, I just wanted to reply because I thought your picture was hot ... *ahem* sorry... Sweet, and sad, and simplistic... and lovely. There is a more than just a tenderness to this tiny ode... there is a longing. How you manage to disguise the rhythm & rhyme, so one only senses the soft images... and the watercolored bareness of emotion...? *shaking head* iambic poets are beyond me... it amazes me that you could compose this with such ease... even were it not for the dictating structure. it was wonderful to read you again, Linda... if only in sample ~me |
