My only son has almond eyes He's nine years old and often cries. He's short and thin for his tender age; His heart of hope often dances with rage. People say he won't settle down; He fidgets too much, he's such a clown. They say he argues, finds flaws in each word. He tries to explain how the world is absurd. He thinks too much, worries more, A tornado may come or there may be a war. He loves his family, but hurts in his heart. He "does nothing right," doesn't know he is smart. He needs to be loved, honest and real. He needs to be taught it is okay to feel. I can't keep him safe in a Mother's embrace, Despite the pain often painting his face. He says "I'm dumb" but he is far too wise. He whispers "I'm scared" with courageous eyes. The world can't yet see all that he holds A bright sense of humor, a heart filled with gold. Soon he will grow and maybe "sit still" But what of this world he lives in until? I only can smile and tell him I care, Remind him he's good and I'll always bee there. Someday he'll argue and people will see That what's now a disorder was meant to be. He'll learn from this label he wears each hour that challenging doubt gives a soul power. -Written for my son Travis, Diagnosed with Childhood Onset Bipolar Disorder at age 7 [This message has been edited by angelbear (01-09-2002 09:51 AM).] |

Thank you so much, Angelbear...for re-posting this for me. I very much enjoyed reading it. Little boys are so special, and this poem was so very well written. Your love for your son shows through every word. copyright2001 Lyra Nesius |

Angelbear, Thank you for reminding us of the pains of childhood. My daughter suffers from depression at age 23 but it was undiagnosed for years. She said that at the age of 9, she felt like she had an empty hole in her heart. We assumed she was just a little worrier and she worked so hard to cover up her pain by making everyone laugh. Oh, I pray that your child will do well with early treatment. God bless you both. Cheryl |

Larry C Thanks so much..yes Moms are so important. I have learned that lesson well! Madame Chipmunk-Thank you for reading the poem and for the words of support. :} Cheryl...I greatly appreciate your feedback. When your daughter was young treatment for children was not very common. I hope she is doing well now! Even now many signs go unnoticed. I am lucky that I am a Psychiatric Clinician and recognized some symptoms early. But, as you well know, there is still a stigma! I can't control |
