She wears her makeup artfully
where the black stripes converge around her slanted eyes
Carrying herself proudly, her tail standing straight
pointing skyward
Her cheek pouches bursting with acorns,
a good harvest today
Two weeks of dinner from the woodpile by the lake

But the future is never secure
Tomorrow, her furry paws will carry her swiftly from her predators
For the Red Tailed Hawk, she could be breakfast
and so she flees to her subterranean condo
her soft brown coat camouflages her in the surrounding woodlands
keeping her warm,
two white stripes meeting at head and tail
Fleet footed and smart,
she knows how to escape
Scurrying through the tangled underbrush
Madame Chipmunk returns home

Lyra - I am not a poetry expert, but is this a free verse write by you.  This is the first one I think I've seen from you that doesn't rhyme, and I like it.  Nicely done.  I am glad to see you got away, I would hate to see a hawk take you away.   I have just one concern, you know you are not a chipmunk, right?

Thanks so much, Marsha...I feel a bit out of my element with free verse, but I am trying to add it to my repertoire.
I am glad that you like it.

Barry and Floria.....thank you so much for those very effusive compliments.
I was just trying some free verse...so I thought I would do something just a little bit on the autobiographical side.
I am glad that you enjoyed it.

Thanks so much, Noah...I certainly appreciate your reply and I am happy that you enjoyed my poem.

Dave, thanks so much for commenting...and yes...this was my little foray into free verse.  I have done some before, but posted them in the free verse forum on MTC...and since you never went there.....you don't know what you missed

Now, about your concern...Yes, I am a chipmunk...because David says I am and he should know better than anyone.

I am making acorn pizza for dinner tonight...in case anyone is interested.  My place at 8 sharp!

Madame C,
You stuff those cheeks well and run even faster. But it's the tail in the air that I like!

Thanx Barry,  Have you known lots of chipmunks?  I bet I am the only chipmunk you have ever known who also writes poetry, and I can even type with my furry paws.

Thanks so much for reading and replying, Kay....Yes I am a nature lover and also an environmental activist.  I am a member of my city's Environmental Concerns Committee...and have also been involved in groups which have tried to prevent the city from developing the last of our open greenspace.  The people on the city commission don't like me too much for that.
Thats why they turned me into a chipmunk.
They figured that it would make it harder for me to show up at city hall and preach to them.   But I do it anyway.....with my tail high up in the air.

Seymour, thanks for your reply...
You too are invited to dinner.
Acorn pizza is very good and also very low in fat....and acorn butter is a lot less fatty than peanut butter...
Acorns are very high in nutrients also.
