Playing Hooky Saga (Grades 4-8 at once!)
By Larry Chadwick

It was a recess softball game,
The teacher had lost his mind.
All the balls were strikes,
The pitcher was never behind.

Finally the confusion was over,
And we were walking back to school.
The teacher was skipping on ahead,
We thought he was acting like a fool.

So we were talking things over,
The whole classroom had agreed.
When he disappeared from sight,
We’d ditch school and ignore his lead.

It was off to the desert we went,
Even though we should have been in school.
For we were determined not to return,
When we could get away with breaking the rule.

But Raymond started to lose his nerve,
Self-appointed, he was ambassador of the day.
He headed back to the classroom,
To see what the teacher had to say.

He could hardly wait to come back to see us,
And grabbed his bike to pedal our way.
So back and forth he rode,
Believing the teacher’s favor to gain along the way.

Then he reported the teacher went home,
Locked the door and just walked away.
We had no choice but to return,
Reading through the window his message that day.

And printed plainly on the chalkboard,
Our punishment offered in multiple choice.
Instruction given to return at three,
To select our discipline with our voice.

The options were simple and direct,
An eight page report or ten swats on the rear.
Correction applied equally to all four grades,
Decisions extracted by the teacher with cheer.

I was raised on a significant strap,
And knew that a paper would take way too long.
But Raymond’s dad was mostly a wimp,
Besides Raymond rarely did anything wrong.

So I bent over and grabbed my knees,
Nine swats, but the tenth was extra strong.
And with pride I returned to my desk,
A cheap price to pay for being so wrong.

Raymond thought some effort he too could avoid,
He chose the swats for some time to save.
Ambassadors, he assumed, would be spared,
Instead he learned they had to be brave.

When his final swat was applied,
He burst into tears and began to cry.
I wore a smile at the sight of it. Finally,
I did something better and it wasn’t a lie.

Noah,
Thanks...and you make it good point! Then I preferred the spanking to writing. Because writing scared me to death.

Childhood is a very confusing time, and you portrayed it beautifully Larry.
At least you didn't have to write that essay!

Lyra,
Yeah, it was a close call. The scariest part was dad always said a whooping at school was a whooping at home. But he spared me. It was my only spanking in school though.

Karen,
Thanks a bunch.

Irish Rose,
Thanks. It was a fascinating experience. We all came in from the desert and ate at the cafeteria run by our teacher's wife. LOL

hey larry, can I slap your behind? LOL

I would have chosen the ten swats too because writing takes tooo long!!
I was a bad girl when I was in school, Instead of going to catch the bus in the morning, my friends and I would find somewhere else to go

Larry--The ability to see humor in something that at the time probably wasn't very funny, is a gift..it is also great for keeping you young at heart.  Enjoyed this look at the boy of you.

You have to take it like a man in order to be one!!  At the same time it's like, don't do the crime if you can do the time.
This made me think of my english teahcer in high school, what a babe...
I couldn't wait for him to spank me!   LOL
Enjoyed the insight Larry~

You do know that you worry me? We think way too much alike. By the way, thanks a ton.
