I count the steps on boarding
this jumbo aeroplane
I focus on my counting
so I don't go insane

I find my seat and sit in it
The stewardess just smiles
As I look out the window
I can see for miles and miles

With seatbelt firmly buckled
I slowly look around
To see the people small as ants
buried in the droning sound

the hostess looks and smiles at me
she can see I am quite scared
although we haven't moved an inch
white knuckles now are bared

Now I'm into heavy breathing
As in my seat I pant
I concentrate on formulas
So I don't begin to rant

We're three miles high and rising
As a spark comes past the door
And I know I'm going to die
I'm sure of this - I'm sure

The captain says don't worry
And I wonder why
It's not as if we've all grown wings
And somehow learned to fly

I reach up for the oxygen
but my mask will not fall
looking all around I see
there are none down at all

I don't like my chances
As we drift from three miles high
So with head down in my lap
I bend and kiss my butt goodbye

Then comes the screech and bumping
My life flashes by my face
I don't want to die like this
Locked in this tiny space

The crowd are now all laughing
We've landed safe and then
T'was all imagination
But I'll not fly again.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Is this true Lynne?  Are you giving up flying for good?  To be honest with you, I have only flown a few times, but I have always been very afraid of going down in a plane crash.  Now, after 9/11, you don't know what can happen once you are up there.  I will probably fly again, but I won't make it regular habit.  Nice write.

Beautiful description of the fears many people have. When I first started flying I felt the same way, but as you say, it is all imagination. And, darn it, it robs us of the glory of seeing God's heavens with beautiful white fluffy clouds, a sight one can not find anywhere on dismal dark earth.

Why not have a couple stiff drinks and write a poem for the angels you are flying with. Wheeeeee! Remember your chances of landing safely are a lot better than riding home tonight. do you worry about the big out of control 18-wheeler? I hope not. 'Tis a great poem. Thanks for sharing.

Kethry - well my dear, me thinks that you will be flying again, or taking a long trip by boat. I'll pray for you when it's time to go for the plane ride...

Hey guys,
don't worry...this is not true. I love flying with a passion. If I could have a job that involved weekly commutes by plane I would jump at the chance. This is just a small poem that came out of a challenge on another site.

Hello Lynne

This was wonderful and I must admit that I could relate to the white knuckles on take off and the heart going a hundred miles an hour.  I've done a lot of flying but I still can't quite get used to the take offs!

Take care......Sue

Keth darling sister of my soul and holder of my hearts song, YOU know very well this is about me and my flying phobia, it’s not fair darling heart, you sit there telling me the wings are moving and laugh. Well, so be it darling heart, you’ll be sorry, I’ll think of retribution darling heart.

I’ll think about doing this challenge but I prefer to do my flying on wings of fire. For you I’ll make the effort, I expect there is some benefits darling heart. Mmmmmm yes there are of course……….. lots of them.

YOU know that this is utterly excellent darling girl so I won’t bother saying it, go and find reply number 63 it said how wonderful your writing is in form and structure. Which it is……….. I love it of course

Love and warm stuff

These may not be your feelings, but I never would have known that had you not said anything about it. They really seemed like it was something you were firm about. As for me, I don't like the thought of flying but once up in the air I'm okay. Wouldn't do it unless I had no other alternative though. Good response to the challenge.

Keth...after 9/11...I think I knew this feeling...

I did not like getting on a plane and flying
about 5000 miles one way...and then doing
it all over again on the way back...yes,
knuckles were showing a little...

err...enjoyed the flight...

this was funny. i don't want to laugh at you're fright...but it didn't seem to have too serious a tone i liked it very much. especially when you kissed your butt good bye in the crash position. hehehe.

take some valium in the terminal. you'll be fine.

Keth,
Now sweetie...let's think this through. It's hard to live on a really big island and never fly again. Unless you have lots of time on your hands for really big boat trips. I hope you reconsider. And about that kiss... Fun (I thought)

Suetang, I chew gum on takeoffs and I love the bump on landing. I was once on a courtesy flight with a group of people who had never flown before. They stood and cheered when the plane landed.

Marsha, here I was trying to keep your name out of it...I did not want to come across all superior you know and you go and dob yourself right in. Besides which you soar on wings of wonder...why would you need a plane.

Enchantress,
I love to fly too...sometimes I use a plane

skyshine, how can you have a name like that and not love to fly. It was a tongue in cheek write for me.

Magnus,
I think 9/11 impacted on us all...but probably me less than Americans because of the distance...also because I'm a fatalist...what will be will be.

Ethan,
If I took Valium in the terminal I'd be flying a dragonback before I got to the plane. Valium makes me hallunicate you know.

Larry,
given that I spent six weeks in a leaky boat, sick as a dog to get to this island it is hardly likely I would travel this way again. And the kiss was meant to be fun.

Thanks everyone
Keth

Oh dear Keth, did I ever need this great belly laugh, I am falling out of my chair.
"The captain says don't worry
And I wonder why
It's not as if we've all grown wings
And somehow learned to fly"

and this one especially

"I don't like my chances
As we drift from three miles high
So with head down in my lap
I bend and kiss my butt goodbye'

Hahahaha this meant so very much to me, as I had a bad experience on a plane in a thunderstorm tornado , and I will not fly unless God sends me my own wings..Love this so much Keth... floria

Kethry,
I know what you mean.I can't give up flying though because I do love to go on vacation.I just hold on to the seat, close my eyes, and breathe.Ususally that makes me through.

Kethry, amusing but first rate self-dialog!

Really nice job of writing, and i commend you!

It's not the fall from 30,000 feet that kills you. It's that sudden impact when you hit the ground that gets you.Does having your seat belt fastened really help.
