Her cigarette smoldered in the ashtray,
Swirling smoke to the ceiling to linger
As it filled the room top down, in a haze.
Her youthful white smile was tinted yellow
But her eyes still sparkled with her laughter,
Beauty was still hers after many days,
Many years, many miles, and excesses;
She tossed back shots while I sipped at my beer,
We spoke of long gone and parting of ways.

“How many years has it been, more than ten?”
“Fifteen” I said, and she nodded her head.
“You’re looking good, much better than you should”
I just shrugged a reply saying “I don’t know why.”
Closing time, she went her way, I went mine,

smiling here, reminds me a bit of "still crazy after all these years...."

you have captured a very human moment, once again writing photographs in sepia...

hey!! it was fun, too, wasn't it? nice to finally meet you in person!! LOL!!

awwshucks! that wasn't me! was it? hmm.... well it coulda been!

i really loved this piece... nice job professor! you still going to bawlmer tues nights and reading? one day i'll make it out there and have a latte with ya.... or we can go across the street and i can watch you drink some beer while i have a shot or two... hehe

thing is, tues nights are Brownie nights, which makes the homework even tougher to get done (you DO know that the school system doesn't really teach much any more but instead they leave it to the parents to teach the kids, but that's another poem and another story) and unfortunately, i'm an hour and a half away, darnit... but hey, it's a nice thought anyway...

whoops! sorry... sleep deprivation makes me ramble sometimes...

all this to say... great pome, gloom!

Terrific write, Gloom.

I believe that meetings like this happen often, especially to lonely people in bars where the alcohol temporarily anethesizes the soul. And I believe that most people do more often part at closing time than go together. As sad broken hearts often cling to memories of past love, and harbor fears of a new broken heart.

And there are often practical physical fears, as well, of disease, and fear or respect for other people's mates or their lovers.

If truth were known I believe that it is rare for parting to be due to righteousness, per se. Although, often a purity of spirit guides us thorugh. So in a sense parting may be due to Love, or selfishness, but righteousness? For I believe that righteousness is a dependant not a causitive variable in the dynamics of human behaviour and leads us to part at closing with sadness still in the heart. Perhaps multiplied.

Interesting poem! Again, good write. Terrific content.

Thank you, Serenity,
And that “Still crazy after all these years” applies to me,
Don’t figure I’ll change there either.
T’was a human moment, glad you enjoyed.

Thank you, doreen peri,
Actually, since I’ve never met you,
I could have not met you again.
As for the Latte, I tend toward the Mint Tea,
But an old man like me can’t make it every week,
We do get your poems read by your friend,
Who does a wonderful job of reading.
I understand about your conflict and problems on getting there,
But I can read yours here, and your words are always a pleasure
Especially such warm responses.

Thank you, Silver Streak,
Your words are kind and hold much truth,
I don’t often go to bars, but the bars around her are almost empty
When closing time comes, except for the loners and losers.
Neither of which pursue things with thought of what might happen,
Disease or Morality plays no part in things.

Chance meetings happen by 'chance'?
Perhaps.. Perhaps not... It's what we do next that matters.. We can walk on.. or not.. The choice is ours, yes??

Nice write, PG..

Thank you, Nan,
I believe this one was just chance,
Or perhaps you’ll chalk it up to destiny?
It might be nice if everything had an unseen plan,
An unknown schedule, but in this case,
I believe it was all chance.  Glad you enjoyed.

Thank you, Sea,
Travel along anytime, it’s not the happiest of trips,
But as long as it pleases you, it pleases me.

Gloom
