*This is the First Reading and Meditation from Mass for Peace in Our Time*

Reader: A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah:

The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

The Word of the Lord
(Isaiah 2:1-4)

Assembly:Thanks be to God

I wonder if Jerusalem of Judah was anything like
      Gettysburg of Pennsylvania
muddy,
      dirty,
            blood-soaked
the sun filters through as gray because of all the smoke
the smoke from the fires
       and the guns
              and the cannon
the smoke that fills my nose daily, acrid and thick
but at least, it's better than smelling the stench
of the dead
I lie awake at night in my tent and I can hear them
I can hear them calling out to you with their last breath
are they coming to your mountain?
will they have rooms forever in your house?
the last time I went to your house
was to say good-bye to them
and I'll have to do it again today and again tomorrow
                      and again the next day
until it's done

is this the way that we're supposed to learn?
as we to learn the ways of war before
we learn the ways of peace?
must countless thousands die so that we who are left
       learn from their mistakes?
is this the path that you've chosen for us?
or, have we chosen a path away from you?
would we rather learn the ways of war
                         the ways of suffering
                            the ways of loss?

perhaps we would

all I know is that you can take my sword
and turn it into a plowshare
but, what about my gun
              and these cannon
                   and my hands?
will you beat those down as well?
will I lose the use of them too?

perhaps I will

is the lesson over?
because I think that I am done with this class
I've learned all that I would like to about
war. . .

now, I'm ready
          ready to learn

                         . . . of peace. . .

from the diary of Chaplain J.R. Hollingsworth, with the Fourth Tennessee Regiment, Confederate Army at Gettysburg

Note: Please note that the name J.R. Hollingsworth is fiction, and that this is my idea of something that might have been written by someone like him during that time period.

Sven,

Serious power behind each of those words.  The questions your good Chaplain asks are so real, pained, and, well, questioning.  Each of us has asked numerous questions to our Gods, but your Chaplain couldn't have doubted his path with more love than he showed.  Well written.  I do hope to see more.

I must say, I like this one a lot, Sven.  Nicely done from a unique perspective.  In my opinion, this is the best series you have done.  Excellent work!
