Momma says when I grow up,
...I'll be big and strong,
Just eat your carrots, drink your milk,
...I hope it don't take long.
There's a boy in second grade,
...who's mean as mean can be,
He waits outside the schoolhouse door,
...each day to beat on me.
I thought first grade would be a treat,
...to learn to read and write,
It seems the only thing I need,
...is learning how to fight.
There's the bell, school day is done,
...I walk outside afraid,
But as I leave the schoolhouse door,
...no boy from second grade.
It seems his parents moved away,
...he's no longer here,
I run and jump and sing and play,
...released from bully's fear.
Tonight at supper, momma says,
...eat every single pea,
Drink your milk 'til its all gone,
...you'll shoot up like a tree.
I push away from table's side,
...peas still on my plate,
I say to momma, I'll stay a kid,
...growing up can wait.

"growing up can wait." smiling, I've been telling myself that for forty years!

I like this much, seemingly whimsical but points out the fact that we all have fears.
Enjoyed, Mr. Tim! It's good to be home today!

Tim--There is alot of pain in childhood, eating peas is one of them, leaning that the world can be mean is another. Wonderful writing!
