The Maiden’s Way She pulled open drapes, allowed in the day Then smiled as the sunbeams gave up their rays, She watched as neighbors went about their chores Then leaned into age, eight decades and more No one was about to hear her complain She duly endorsed ignoring her pain Arthritic hands could still open a jar As with her bright hopes she counted on stars Music, news and chatter filled her airwaves, Slowly fingering old photos she’d saved, Read bits of letters from yesterday’s past Wondered how time had sped by her so fast Nieces and nephews, her cousins galore Write to her often, on holidays, more; They are her family, for them, she prays, Going about life in Old Maiden ways She greets all children as hers on the block They stand around her, engage in small talk She listens as desires and dreams emerge She gives each a dollar ~ something to splurge She tends to her flowers, rids ground of weeds From her dried posies, removes future’s seed. A moment’s ponder, on seeds of her own What they'd be like, had they been sown. For fate had sent love along her path’s way He had put country first, went the next day The attack had been swift, he’d been as fast For military might steeped his young past. His kiss? A promise; her pledge was his start. “Never my dear will we be so apart, as not to know when the other’s heart sings,” Then he left after bestowing his ring. Time passed to a morn when the sun shone bright Swift blackened when grim news faded all light Her ring flickered through her great flow of tears Her heart was so sore, but not from her fears. For all she could feel from the very start Was this fullest feeling warm in her heart “You will know indeed love when my heart sings, you’ll know it each time you look at my ring.” ~*~ She pulls open drapes, allows in the day Then smiles as the sunbeams give up their rays, She watches as neighbors go about their chores She leans into age, eight decades and more No one is about to hear her complain She duly endorses ignoring her pain Arthritic hands move about as she sings Of a promise, a pledge, a slender ring. ©Karilea Rilling Jungel 18 January 2002 [This message has been edited by Sunshine (01-20-2002 10:58 AM).] |

Oh Sunshine, This is simply devine and it is going into my library. Thankyou for this one. Chris Life is not measured by breaths you take, but by moments that take your breath away. |

Karilea, this is so romantic and beautiful. You are an incredible story teller, I could read these all day. So many images, all so tenderly painted with your artistic pen. Thank you for sharing this. |

Much of this poem just seems to be about my own mother... She's there - sitting and watching - watching and sitting... You've captured "The Maiden's Way".. for sure... Nicely done, m'friend... |

Kari darling sister of my soul I suppose you think that I’m going to praise you to the skies? Hmmm? …….. Well, of course I am, this is utterly utterly wonderful as YOU very well know. This is really fabulous writing sometimes when you don’t expect it showers of moonbeams descend on you. They dropped like little twinkles of delight when I read this. Oh my eyes they are refreshed and my soul is washed in joy this is sooooooooo beautiful. Absolutely first class writing Love and warm stuff As always Mushy To give light to them that sit in darkness..... to guide our feet into the way of peace St John ch2 v1 |

Karilea, I don't know if you based this on a person you know, but if you did, you have sung her life beautifully. Traci "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." |

This is incredibly beautiful. I confess I could picture this lady vividly in my minds eye. A very touching write. If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please? |

Now I know you know where this is being read on Thursday, and it is definitely going into my book too! That could be any one of us one day, Karilea, and you gave her grace, showed her emotions, but more importantly, I felt the love of life she has for she carries on every day in perhaps the same pattern. Oh dear rambing, but you know this one I will hold so close to my heart. ~* CARPE' DIEM *~ |
