At the fire the embers stirred, when from the dark came a word. How did knowledge come to be, for the ones who pass it down to me? For a moment, silence was in the air, as the old one stroked the lone wolf’s hair. Then he spoke of Raven, of what he did, with the stone of Knowledge which he did rid. To spread the knowledge he had a plan, for the water of life to spread like a fan. Clutching the stone, he flew so high, until he was but a dot in the deep blue sky. He dropped the stone with unerring aim, into the water of life, the knowledge came. The first ripple out, were the ones to teach, the second ripple came with the ones they reached. So knowledge spread with each small wave, and passed along for the others to save. Then the ripples kept reaching the shore, and the tribes spread out with this lore. In this way it came to be done, That far off day in the skies with the sun. And if the waters ever should dry, the stone is still there to be taken to the sky. For the waters will come from the heaven’s rain, and all will be done, once more again. So the answer is there before your eyes, it came from Raven who took to the skies. Silence fell upon the forest’s floor, as the old one stroked the wolf a little bit more. The fire did flicker and shed its light, upon the gathering that assembled in the night. |

Logan--I love it when you write the wisdom of the old one stroking the wolf..and the fire circle...I think the ravan may have dropped one of your poems etched in stone. |

The ebb and flow of this is as easy as the thought process when one is blessed with listening to the spirits - the slow start, the build, the release back to calm... well done Sir... |

Dear Logan, No one tells a story like you...no one! I find myself hanging onto every word...and they seem to come straight from your heart...like a memory which you repeat so easily. Love to sit by the fire as you weave your tales. ~hugs, Nancy~ ~I've loved you forever, in lifetimes before.~ |

May the heavens stay forever bountiful adding gentle rain to the pool of knowledge, and the ripples swell to waves and the unenlightened be overwhelmed by tsunamis. The Raven is a good choice, the only animal which dwells on all continents. Enjoyed. |

many piptalk members have said to me quote: or something like that.....and i really really hate it.... i really do... i hate it when someone tells me it was "wonderful" but they didn't understand a word of it. if they didn't understand it, then why did they say it was wonderful?? ok, so, i won't say that to you. i'll say, i don't understand this poem but i will come back to read it again and see if i can follow it. care to explain it? frankly, you have so many responses to this that i'm feeling rather stupid. i have no idea what you're trying to say here. i apologize for stating my confusion, especially because you never told me you didn't understand my words, but so many others have said that to me for 2+ years now that i figured it was ok to actually say it to somebody else.... but unlike others who have said to me that they have no clue what i'm talking about, i'm going to ask you if you would take the time to explain this poem.... i'm sorry... i feel stupid... i really don't understand it at all can you help me out? and will you forgive me for being so dense? well, at least i asked you to explain it... i'm trying (if i were you, i'd say to me... "read it again and THINK this time"... LOL!!!! i'm not in the habit of explaining my poetry, though sometimes i have actually succumbed to it, when asked...... basically, though, once you get the reputation of writing stuff nobdy can understand, very few read it anyway, no matter how simplistic it is) i'll come back and read this tomorrow and try to figure out what it means.... in the mean time, if you'd like to explain/analyze it, i'd love to read it i'm embarrassed that i couldn't follow it but it might have something to do with having only 3 hours of sleep last night waiting for a meteor shower that i couldn't see because it was so overcast thanks much!! |

Logan, I absolutely love Raven fables. This is one I haven't heard before. The Haida have one about Raven and the First Man, and many cultures depict the Raven as the originator of Life, the giver of Knowledge, and even the ultimate trickster. The ripple of knowledge goes 'round the earth, from generation to generation. And I too believe the wells of knowledge never really run dry. But sometimes they are a bit murky, and in need of refreshment. I really enjoyed this poem, and will save it in my Raven fables file. (Yes, I started one last year) I've written a couple of poems with Ravens in them, though none as a complete theme or fable as you have done. Thank you, for the wisdom of the "Raven." thank you, Logan, for your detailed e-mail explaining the levels of meaning in this piece. I truly appreciated your responding so kindly and helping me out.... I was always taught that if I didn't understand something and wanted to understand it, the best thing to do would be to come right out and ask questions. And I'm glad I did! Now that I know more about the native American legend, I can sincerely tell you this is a fine piece of work! Great writing! Thank you again! |
