Your Birthday

28 years ago, or maybe 29.
or gosh, it could be 27,
You know my grasp of time.

Anyway,

I woke in the night with an awful pain,
And thought, I’ll never do this again.

But it wasn’t that bad,
Until morning came,
And I told your Dad
This is not a game.

Check on me at lunch time,
We might have to go.
He went on to work
For an hour or so.

But the company clerk’s wife
Told him he’d better go home.
A good thing, I was dressed
And on my way all alone.

We drove on to Bitburg
Through the snow and the ice.
I kept biting my lip,
It didn’t feel nice.

But you came out just right
A fine healthy boy.
The smallest babe in the nursery,
But to us a big joy.

It wasn’t till the next day that I brought all the nurses in the hospital
running a panicky race,
Because I screamed
when you squirted me in the face.

Nan

Touching, funny, & dramatic in its content. I enjoyed this, Nan.

Nan, such a cute tribute to your son. Those little boys are famous for the unexpected sprays. Been there, done that.  Cheryl

Nan,
well done on the birth of your son. I know how that feels. My son was delivered in twenty minues from woe to go, it's a good thing we lived so close to the hospital...and it was four in the morning.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Dear Bill,
Honest, I try to keep track, but my brain doesn't keep numbers very well. But anyway, he's in there somewhere.

Dear Marsha,
Now, now, I know this isn't one of my best poems, but he's one of my best sons, so that's okay. (I only have the two).

Dear Opeth,
Thanks so much - the drama was real, but regardless of the pain the whole experience was filled with subdued hilarity. God knows why.

Dear Cheryl,
The orderly cleaning the hospital room had to show me how to change diapers, and he never said a word about watching out for the spray. They should train their orderlies better, is what I think.

Dear Kethry-'woe to go'- I never heard that before! I love that expression. My second boy took a total of two hours and thirty minutes, and I thought that was quick!

All Moms remember their kids birth, even mine says she had a 'heartburn'...I was a hairy kid and there's this wive's tale that
if you have an acid stomach, your kid's going to be hairy?get you to chuckle? Nice remembrance Nan.

Dear Martin,
Hah! I never heard that before. I must have had acid stomach both times, since they were both born with a full head of hair-but I don't remember it.

Nan - Very amusing.  Hopefully your son doesn't still squirt you in the face, now that would be down right embarrassing.lol  Well done.

Dear Dave,
Thanks-he did it a few more times before I learned to take evasive action.

Dear Lyra,
Baby boys should come with instructions!

Dear Juanita,
I bet Stevie was a handful from the start!
