thank you guys, these trees have been bugging me to write them a poem for at least a decade. i feel i may have to write a few more to make up for my neglect. there are some redwoods north of fort bragg on one of the lost coasts that are just fascinating. they didn't grow straight up like they normally do, but in all directions. there is a path leading through them, it's like walking amid alien trees on another world, litterally. at the end of the path is a massive serpet redwood with one trunk and twenty or thirty stalks growing up into the sky. there is a fallen bough from a nearby tree that has been propped up against the platform from whence the stalks ensue. it may be climbed to sit about 20/30 feet off the ground in the midsts of these stalks, growing all ways from the great trunk into an alien looking presence that stretches aloft into the sky. one of the most amazing creations of nature i have ever seen. i want to write a poem about these, but am as yet at a loss for words to describe them in form. it is clear to me why these trees have not been hewn, they are not straight enough to promise decent sized planks of sellable value. the wind rushing in off the coast has shaped these redwoods into a form of life unbelievable over the course of centuries. |

wornways--The redwood holds magnifcence in my heart, on this earth. I have lived among them, in the back yard reaching heaven. Thank you for posting this. |

Wow, you have just taken me on a favorite hike, as I know the gnarly gracefully twisted trees you speak of. I grew up in CA, and miss those redwoods more than I thought I would. I started a poem a few months ago about those very trees, but only have the memories now. I wish they were in front of me. When you touch them, and sit next to them, there is a feeling of transcendence few other trees can give. I am a tree hugger Thank you for the trip. As for some imagery, sitting within the middle of that one old trunk is like sitting in the middle of a giant lotus blossom, wrapped in antiquity's arms of love and understanding. That's about as far as I got in describing the feel of sitting there. Please keep writing! [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (12-18-2001 02:43 PM).] |
