Memories coat air at water's edge,
weighing thickly upon
every breath and sigh
of the turning tide.
Moonlight peeks through gossamer clouds,
silvery shafts painting sand in eerie glow,
gently caressing a slender figure
dressed in somber shades
of gray and sorrow.
Her feet slip slowly, silently,
through grains of sand,
light impressions mark her route,
the only evidence of her passing.
Sea foam swirls behind
erasing pain's path,
a road she walks alone every evening,
doomed in restless despair
to wander helplessly on forlorn shore.
Tearstained dark eyes smudged
with shadows of grief
never leave the immense black ocean,
searching desperately for release.
Pale lips tremble in tired need,
yearning to smile with blessed delight
when hope remembers to remain,
healing her vacant heart.

But the scene plays out again and again,
each ending identical to the night before.
For years she has haunted the barren beach,
waiting for her love to return.
And as daylight approaches,
the first rays of dawn touching horizon,
her shape begins to fade,
immaterial as wisps of smoky mist,
and finally disappears.

But the breeze carries a soft whisper,
sweetly soaking the coming day
with sad, endless sentiment,
"Until tomorrow is forever, my love,
the night will be my home."

Arrestingly beautiful, Chell.
I really loved your imagery and the sadness weeped through every line.
Great job!
