She speaks of love, but I hear broken dreams.
I cannot trust her, and although I try,
I cannot share her fine romantic schemes.

I court belief, but pained reflection seems
To indicate her promise is a lie-
She speaks of love, but I hear broken dreams.

I fear deceit, betrayal; how it screams
Through flowered sonnets dancing in the sky-
I cannot share her fine romantic schemes.

Such anguish, as my troubled mind now teems
With images of happy plans awry-
She speaks of love, but I hear broken dreams.

'Mid dark despair a flash of reason gleams;
She cannot share my pain, or tell me why
I cannot share her fine romantic schemes.

A poet scribbles verses, burning themes
To make a wounded lover weep or sigh.
She speaks of love, but I hear broken dreams-
I cannot share her fine romantic schemes.

I love this villanelle, Nan.
You are so good at this!
Your meter and flow are perfect...and the piece is a beautiful tribute to a fine poet.

"Yet, love, mere love, is beautiful indeed
And worthy of acceptation, Fire is bright,
Let temple burn, or flax; an equal light
Leaps in the flame from cedar-plank or weed:
And love is fire."
Sonnets From The Portugese, EB Browning

Thank you for such a beautiful reminder to pick up my little Browning again!
I enjoyed this poem immensely.

Thank you all, I wrote this a few months ago and thought I'd post it here and see if anyone liked it. I never imagined I'd get such a response. I thought I was the only one who read the old poets, Keats and Shelly and Browning. No matter which one I pick up, they affect me strongly.
Marsha, Sunshine, MyEnchanted Melody, Lyra, Mistletoe Angel, Mysteria and Midnitesun, I know I'm going to like this place.   I already love the people here.
