When I Found My Grandpa
by Larry Chadwick

Grandpa seemed to love his granddaughters most,
But for him the grandsons were a challenge at best.
Then again grandpa was so shy it really was hard,
To socialize with just about anyone he’d protest.

So just like most kids are usually prone to do,
I decided maybe he didn’t really care about me.
That was how life with grandpa would proceed,
Not all that close and that was how it would be.

But I finally grew up and had some kids of my own,
It was time to understand grandpa, at least I’d try.
Slowly it sank in and became so clear, even to me,
It wasn’t what he thought of kids, he really was shy.

Then came that moment I hadn’t considered in advance,
The day that my mother called and reported him gone.
I heard what she said and reasoned it out in my mind,
We weren’t that close and it wasn’t like I was alone.

I had to see my grandma and comfort her dear heart,
And left as soon as I could to be with her there.
I didn’t shed a tear as I made that very long trip,
Until I saw grandma standing alone on the stair.

The wheels started spinning around in my mind,
About my relationship with grandpa over the years.
I couldn’t help but review all the things he had done,
That was when I couldn’t seem to stop all the tears.

He always had a large garden without any weeds,
And gave us free access even to pick strawberries.
I couldn’t forget the creek he dammed up for water,
But didn’t complain when we floated boats and ferries.

For him, being out in nature was always a thrill,
You hardly had to ask and he’d take you on a hike.
And when I was little I could find it in his shed,
Without even asking he’d let me ride the bike.

How could I forget when he’d go out to get the cow,
He would stand in the field and he’d shout “here Boss!”
And then when Boss would finally walk up to him,
Grandpa would throw me up on her back with a toss.

I could hardly believe the emotions that came to me,
As I retraced my life with grandpa when I was young.
Memories reformed my opinions of all those times,
He showed his love for me by the things he had done.

The past is history and the future is a mystery, but today is a gift and that is why it is the present!

Those are some wonderful memories, Larry. Memories are the real family heirlooms, not the furniture, the jewelry, the property and the cash. It's the memories that are the richest rewards of life. But then, you already knew that. Hugs to you.

Kacy,
You know they're both gone...but grandpa for almost 20 years. I sure miss them...thanks.

They are both watching you. Be careful what you say and do.   So gramps put you on the cow, not the bull?
