There is a statue of a horse and rider in a little park along 16th Street, in Washington, D.C. The horse – and yes, the rider, too – is likely like none you’ve ever seen in bronze. The rider is a hunched-over man in a long coat, with a broad-brimmed hat on a head bent forward, as though hiding from rain, and the plaque beneath it says something about a circuit-riding minister – Methodist, I think. But the most curious aspect of it all is that the horse has bent down its head to lick – or nibble at – the knee of its left foreleg. “The man who made that,” my father once told me, “really knew his horses!” I, who know nothing of horses, but only something about 1949 Studebakers and silly-looking 1950’s Henry J’s, and the toy-like British MG of 1954 – believe my father. I have no choice. So true. Not doing your own research opens you up to believing anything, especially when spooned out by "trusted" sources. In this case, it was the truth. Maybe not in other cases though. A good write, Glenn. Thought food. |
