Listening to every heart

0 posted 2001-12-01 07:51 AM

The Overnighters

Yesterday mantled itself over my
shoulders with precision
as eyes of tomorrow
let me peer back at then

I drew Yesterday’s warmth to me
the giggles scampering up
my spine with chills

George is now gone

~*~

We were the Foursome before The Fab Four
two blondes, two brunettes
sistering our way into tomorrows
that were only a guess

having read that the best laid plans,
well…

tighter than blood lines, we picked
our days, living those ‘60’s
with fads breaking through
the bonds of the ‘50’s

and music was our world…

the Overnighters saw our pajamas
and babydolls,
our dreams, secret wishes,
Fresca and jerky

Orbison made us ooh, we traced
Elvis’ lips into our pillows,
wanting femininity to
cover us with long legs and
ultimate sense

never realizing that hormones would
take control so rapidly,
expansively, roadblocking higher
common sense

K-Mart saw our arms linked
into strategies of sneaking
out to roam the neighborhood
by moonlight, picking
plums from neighbors’ trees,
and checkers saw the bags of plans
for those overnighters
~who dieted back then?~

and the aisles rolled with Yesterday’s
amusement echoing forward

as happily-ever-afters laid in wait
of broken promises

~*~

those tighter than blood lines drew
thin, geography drew boundaries
and passages drew us away

Over time, we’ve all succeeded,
failed, picked ourselves up again
and somewhere…

I hope Faye, Kathy, and Peggy
are pausing as the wind passes over
and they draw their Yesterday
on for warmth

recalling when George came in
with The Fab Four

remembering the Overnighters,
and the bite of Fresca,
the salt of the jerky,
and letting the tear
find its way
down.

Goodbye, George.  Long Live the Music.

The little pranks of those days overwhelming with guilt are viewed so innocent by today's standards and in hindsight the naughty draw to the frowned upon Beetles were a lark to what's transpired since. Enjoyed your recollections.

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Karilea, this is such a beautiful tribute to not only George but to a fond gorgeous memory of yours! (sigh) I wish I could have lived earlier to see the Beatles play, but all the while I am so happy to hear their music play on and on! (big hugggssssss) This is a very touching and fascinating memory, sweet Sunshine! (kiss on cheek) I'm so happy you shared it with all of us! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Great Read,
I especially enjoyed the Nostalgia
Nice imagery also.

A Musician must make his Music,
An Artist must Paint,
A Poet must Write,
if he/she is to ultimately
be at Peace with himself.

Yanno what?  I think I saw the Overnighters one night, in their pink PJs and braids and fluffy pink slippers.  They were putting on a show down at the K-Mart as they rolled this old bum for Jerky money - lol.

Great write, Karilea.  You still seem that same innocent, sweet person you were back then.
