There will come a time, not far away,
I'll bid this earth adieu
As we all must when our time comes
To tell us our turn's through.

I'll have a lavish funeral
My family will be sad.
They'll stand around and talk about
The happy times we had.

And, at the club, my golfing pals
Will tell jokes and recall
The silly way I swung a club
Or how I hit the ball.

My kids will often think of me -
Some funny anecdote
About some foolish thing I did
Or simple poem I wrote.

Fifty years pass. All friends are gone
Most everyone I'd known.
My kids will be grandparents now
With grandkids of their own.

Yet, still, though quite infrequently,
An opportunity
May come around to give someone
A cause to think of me.

Another hundred years go by.
Now no one has survived
Who walked this earth when I did
At the time I was alive.

All stories are forgotten. Every
Thing about myself.
My life has been reduced to but
A picture on a shelf.

Another hundred years. By now
All photos are gone, too
And every house that I lived in
Plus every place I knew.

I will not have existed
And I know this well because
I had a great-great-grandpa once
But don't know who he was.

I don't know what he liked to do,
What kind of job he had.
No way to know what made him tick,
What made him smile or sad.

So that's the way it is, my friends.
It happens to us all
Who don't do something glorious
That history may recall.

And so I sit, with pen in hand,
Creating verse because
It's not to show you what I am
But to show the world I was.

What a lovely write, and so true too. We will be fond memories to our families and friends, but in a couple of hundred years we're completely forgotten. Unless we get sent back here again. But that's another subject.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

michael, you are so beautiful

this poem is a treasure

i never read this until now

beautiful............... !!!!!

--------------------

... you will be remembered, believe me.....
in the hearts of generations on a tree,
in passed down praises, rhymes and jokes and truths
sent to the world....
and though our youths
sometimes seem fleeting
your star will shine
as it does here
forever will your heart endear,

so many lives you've touched....
you've given all to me so much!

..............

wonderful writing, michael!
thank you for reposting this.

See, this is what I was afraid of.  I had been quite successful in deluding myself, now you come along and I read the truth.
In all honesty, if I'm remembered for more than a season...I'll be grateful.

Mike - great poem here - I like the conclusion, but I do have a "minor" correction.  Why do you think it will take 100 hundred years to get rid of your photos?  I'm trying already  to get rid of the ones you sent me - lol.

Very moved by this one, Michael -- the topic, the unfolding, and especially the punchline at the end.  Here's to your memory!  (...I mean...  Here's to your not being forgotten!)

Oh, you amazing poet. You my friend ... could never be forgotten. Not in 100 years, not in 500 years ... nope, no way, no how. A man with as many wonderful stories as you woven through such incredible cadence and rhyme as this ... will live on forever!

Best wishes,
/Kit

LOL. And when the future layers of life settle in, there will still be some ballad-ears, and someone will no doubt ask "Button-button-whose got the button?" And of course, they will all point to you.
