I watch the wood
with him, in silence...
(does he see
the shift of shadow?)
Does the limb of that tall tree,
toss grenade, a breeze to flee?


I watch his eyes,
traces--fear--
(silent, I am
not welcome
here...)
But still I am,
to hold his hand,
futile, but to wipe a tear.


A sideways glance
to see his eyes
in flash of love,
life compromised?
His heart,
a mine-field--step away,
(I'll never know
how it got that way...)
Feeling tremor
in his hands,
I squeeze too tight
to understand...

---He has never left that land.


And we can never understand.

Absolutely beautiful. This poem brought tears to my eyes. Excellent writing. I love it.
